I understand that credit cards are not as common in other countries as
they are in the US.  But my understanding was that that's just because
they aren't as useful and because people tend to adopt other solutions;
not because people can't get them if they want them.  Surely they must
not be *that* hard to get, as (for example) if you want to travel
extensively overseas, you really need one.

It still seems to me that, in essence, credit cards are the instruments
which are designed for cross-currency payments, because they have
currency conversion built in.

If it's really very hard or expensive for non-US residents to get credit
cards, well, that is a problem.  But I doubt that a better solution is
going to come along.  If you need something which allows you to make a
payment to a vendor in that vendor's currency, the cost of which is
automatically converted and charged to you in your currency, well, then,
that is either a credit card or something equivalent to one.  And I
doubt that a whole new system equivalent to credit cards is going to be
invented, when world-wide credit card systems already exist.
