I think the trouble with non-free games is that the hassle (and cost)
involved in actually paying for it in dollars puts most non-USA people off.

I ran a similar survey on the game I run (En Garde) and got the following
(note that the game is run from the UK and is far better known there, hence
the somewhat skewed results)

UK: 22 (17 .ac, 5 .co)
USA: 13 (5 .edu, 8 .com or .org)
Sweden: 5 (4 academic, 1 commercial)
Canada: 4
Switzerland: 2
France, Denmark, Portugal, Netherlands, Australia: 1 each

(of 51 players, 14 are 'commercial' users).
