The operative word here is "were".  Things didn't used to be this
way; this is a fairly recent development.  Many people have, you
see, developed a defense mechanism against spam:  they bounce
from remailer to remailer, and when one address gets on too many
spammer's lists, they abandon it and move on to a fresh one.
It's an approach too fraught with side effect to have much appeal
to me, but to the average person who wouldn't know procmail from
proctology, it's the only way to keep the signal-noise ratio
reasonable.

Most people also haven't the slightest idea how a mailing list
works, and it doesn't even occur to them what happens to those
mailing list messages when the account isn't there any more... so
it doesn't bother their conscience at all to resubscribe to a
list five or six times.

Now, if I was being really arbitrary, I wouldn't allow people
using non-standard SMTP hosts to subscribe.  First one against
the wall is qmail, for excessively cute bounce messages.  ("Sorry
it didn't work out," my sweet patootie!)
