I disagree - it just makes where you build bases a bit more important :)
There are also "unregistered only" games out there.

I will agree that it's easier to play registered (and the quality of the
product and cheap price makes it attractive - at least it did to me).
There are also some great moderators/hosts out there - they give great
service (often better than those games that people pay per turn for).
