The first thing I'd do is a market analysis. What kind of games are
people looking for. What niches have been overlooked? It would be nice
if you could find a niche that has been overlooked. Here's some ideas:

1) A computer moderated supers role-playing game. Super-heros is a
popular genre. So why has it been so overlooked except by hand moderated
PB(e)M games?

2) A Web based real-time empire building game. There are some attempts
at reaching this niche but they are raw. Now is the time to get into it.
This would be a game where players can submit orders for their units at
any time and they would be processed in real time, with events being
reported by e-mail and web views. An order list for each unit would be
maintained and editable. They have real time rpg games and real-time
battle games like star-craft and the like but no real time empire
building games that I know of.

3) Forget the fantasy empire building, space empire building, fantasy
role playing genres unless you plan on doing an awesome job or taking a
different approach (like the real-time suggestion above). They are
already packed and the competition is bound to be fierce.
