There's also the argument that some genres of PBM games are well-supported
by good quality free games, and so there is not much potential market for
those that require money. (Wonder how cheap asbestos is these days)

I notice that one of the few genres of games that do not translate well to
being 'pay to play' are the RPGs -

This doesn't surprise me going on the sheer amount of dross that's out
there.

I guess the reason for the existence of so many Star Trek wannabes etc is
because people like their fantasy 'safe' these days - But the fact that
people are basing their games, scenarioes and characters on direct rip-offs
taken from the TV indicates that a lot of GM-wannabes perhaps don't have an
original idea floating around in their head.

It seems that the hobby is now split between the hardcore wargamers who like
the stats side of thing but aren't able to form too many original, evocative
ideas .. and the kids who 'wanna rock' but aren't always able to put their
imaginations to either paper or the keyboard.

..BTW, today marks another turning point in my rehabilitation. Today I drank
defafeinated for the first time in 10 months. And it shows.
