I can see where you're coming from, though (don't take this as a hostile
comment!) I wonder whether it's unduly limiting to model a PBeM game on the
restrictions of a tabletop campaign?

It's reasonable for anyone running a game to seek to cover costs, and
to expect the players to show commitment by paying some money. But I'd
go further than this - I think that it's reasonable to pay someone for
running a professional service. And I think that payment is an incentive
for designers to produce original games, even if the payment's not high.

Fair enough, but this does make it difficult for those newcomers who'd turn
out to be reliable.

You should stick with the system you feel happy about, of course. But I
don't think it's wrong for moderators to run games commercially - if they
don't keep their players happy, they'll lose them! So a game's worth money
for as long as people will pay for it...
