The player you get in two weeks and the players you have after 2 years are
somewhat different.  As are "free" positions and "commercial" positions.

In my experience, "registered users" is next to useless.  Whats a bunch of
pretend names and short-term hotmail addresses anyway?  Active players is a
valuable statistic, and 200 in 2 weeks is pretty good, but are they making you
a good income?  Because in the end, whether or not you can make any money will
most likely be the yardstick by which you long-term game lifespan will be
measured.

Its certainly *one* way to go.  There are many web games springing up just like
the one you describe.  We run two ourselves and have done for a couple of years
now.  There are hundreds more out there and new ones spring up every week.  I
doubt its "the" way to go, because I dont think there is a "the" way to go.
Lots of different ways to run games work well if the game is good, the company
is good and there is a profit to be made.

For my own part, as long as theres always good stuff to play... thats a good
thing, I think.  Whatever the medium, or method used.
