April 1, 1907 -- German soldiers in Holland and Denmark were reported
loading large quantities of local beer onto commercial freighters.  Nobody
seems to know why they are doing this, or where the beer is bound, or
why the crates are being labeled in English.  Further details are
expected to be announced in the next issue of International War and
Beer Digest.

Baghdad, Aug 2, 1907 -- The winner of this turn's Barbarian of the Month
award is ........................................AUSTRIA, with by
far the most violence points per unit, and a tie (with Germany)
for the most violence points period.  Honorable mention goes to England,
for its spirited defense of England and Wales, despite its apparent
abandonment of Scotland.  The scoring:

Nov 1, 1907 -- Scotland got its first taste of beer in nearly six
months today, thanks to a massive sealift of Carlsberg Beer from Denmark.
The German Third Army, which carried out the sealift, was welcomed by
the citizens of Edinburgh, who have been deprived of their usual brew by
a bitters strike at Guinness.

********************* VILE HEADQUARTERS DESTROYED ***********************

Baghdad, January 16, 1908 -- The headquarters of the Violence Institute of
the Lower Euphrates was destroyed today.  Agents of the United States of
America used a recent invention of bicycle enginners Orville and Wilbur
Wright, called an "airplane", to drop a bomb on VILE headquarters.
The bomb apparantly entered the building via the chimney, took a left
turn at a heating duct, went twice around the third floor, and finally
landed on the director's desk, where it exploded.  Although the building
was totally destroyed, no casualties were reported.

Baghdad, January 17, 1908 -- The Violence Institute of the Lower Euphrates
announced today that it was suspending its biannual "Barbarian of the Month"
award, because its supply of trophies was nearly depleted by in the recent bomb
attack on VILE headquarters.  Only one trophy remains.  The Violence Institute
awarded this final trophy to the United States, in recognition of its
successful raid on VILE.  Honorable mention goes to Austria, the only
country to forcibly evict an enemy from a supply center.

Munich, October 15 -- Kaiser Ludwig von Beetlejuice certainly enjoyed
Oktoberfest this year.  Celebrating with gusto (but no Schlitz) the
recent triumphs of the Witch Hunt Alliance, the Kaiser forgot to order
the attack on France and Austria that his generals had meticulously
planned.  "It's OK," said the drunken Kaiser, "if the world rejects
our peace proposal we'll get 'em next year".

three-way draw with one survivor (Turkey).  I'll accept endgame

German Endgame Report for Montreuil-Sur-Mer:

Thanks to all for an interesting game, and especially to Brian Rapp
for serving as gamemaster.  My only real regret is that the pace of
the game was too slow, and as a result several players lost interest.
It would have been good if Brian had cracked a whip over us to keep
things moving, but other than that it was a great game.

Special thanks to Ray Smith (England) -- your press for the first
few years was hilarious.

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE NORTH:

When the game started I wanted to join with France against
England, England wanted to join me against France, and I don't
really know what France wanted.  Since no two
countries could agree on going after the third, we worked out a 3-way
alliance, and England and I went after Russia starting in '02.  We
wanted to crush Russia quickly, then wheel back and attack France
while he was committed too far south.

When Russia built a fleet in '01, I saw that Russia couldn't take revenge
on me, so I attacked.  I figured he would throw everything at me, and
that would let England take St. Pete and Moscow easily.
We could then turn against France VERY quickly (fall '03 or spring '04).

Unfortunately, England refused to take the first step vs. France.
After I had taken the heat for attacking Russia, with England getting
most of the spoils, I wasn't about to do the same in France.
Meanwhile, England was moving his fleets into the Baltic area (first
Sweden, then he wanted to go to Bothnia), which I saw as a preparation
for an attack on me.  Rather than be stabbed, I decided to stab first.
(If I misread your intentions, Ray, then I apologize.)

I was lucky to win most of my fights with England.  Had France
intervened against me (as he started to do, taking Belgium),
I would have lost quickly, but fortunately he didn't.   The key
turn was after I lost Belgium, when Munich was threatened.  I
invited Austria to attack Munich to keep France out.  I then told
France that Austria was taking Munich, and, since I was obviously
collapsing, wouldn't he rather forestall Austrian growth by bouncing
him out?  It worked perfectly, as France and Austria bounced each other
out while I was out fighting (and beating) England.  From then on
it was easy, as England collapsed and France took my side.
France somehow never did make it to Liverpool, though.

IN THE SOUTH:

For the entire game I had one objective in the south:  to keep Austria
viable, and thereby keep Italy and Turkey in check.  I did this
first by attacking Russia (which I wanted to do anyway), then by
disrupting Italy's attack, and finally by attacking Turkey directly.
Austria paid me back by refusing to help England against me, and by
protecting me from France.  A good alliance, Billy!

Fortunately, we never announced our alliance, and Austria's moves on
Munich (at my invitation) made it look like we were enemies.  This
made it easy to take Sevastopol from Turkey.  It also (perhaps) kept
Turkey and England from cooperating against me in Russia.  By the time
they realized their common interest it was too late.

TOWARDS THE END:

After England took a nosedive I proposed a "Witch Hunt Alliance" with
France and Austria.  Namely, eliminate England and Turkey and call a
3-way draw.  We all had our designated spheres of influence, and mine
was Sevastopol, Ankara, Scandinavia, and Edinburgh.  However, I got
my prizes (except for Ankara) quickly, while Austria and France
advanced more slowly (France not at all in the north), so in the end
I wanted to go for a win.  But with Austria committed to
opposing me (I offered him 2nd place and he said no), and with both
Austria and France showing no interest in continuing the game, I
saw no point to playing on, so I formally proposed the draw.

If we HAD played on, I think I could have gotten 18 centers by the
end of '11 or so.  I would NOT have attacked France frontally, and
probably would not have attacked Austria at all.  My plan was to slip
into the MAO at the first opportunity (S '09?), and meanwhile to force my
way into the ECH from London and Nts.  I could then retake Belgium
from Holland, convoy an army from England to Portugal (!) , and attack
France from the back side and from the sea.  (Much like Schwartzkopf's

Endgame Report from Austria:

This was my first net dip game, and the first dip game I've been in for a
long time.  It was great fun, and I really want to thank Brian for the
speedy turn-around time on the moves.  If you had asked me in '02 if I'd
be here at this point, I would have had to say no.  But that leads me to my
overall strategy in the game.
   I started out talking to Italy about (what I consider to be) a fairly
standard alliance, with the initial intention of taking out Turkey, and
then moving on to Russia.  I had little productive communication with Turkey
or Russia, so I thought it was all set.  Unfortunately, I wasn't clear
enough, and didn't plan for the long term, so Italy thought I was up to
something, and instead decided to attack.  This put me in rather tight
situation, with Russia, Turkey and Italy all vieing for my centers.
   From that point on, I had little choice about what I could do.  Germany
was the only one of my four neighbors who hadn't attacked me, and Italy
and Turkey didn't want to talk.  Russia's timely (or un- , depending on who
you ask) new job that interrupted his playing, just as Germany made his move
probably was my turning point.  Russia would have been an interesting
player, so I'm sorry he left.  Of course, then I would have been watching
from the sidelines.  Anyway, Russia leaving gave me the breathing room I
needed to hold Italy back for long enough that France could start pushing
from the other side (due, I assume to his English/German "treaties").  This
was something I was trying to encourage, but I'm sure had little to do
with my diplomacizing.
   The one thing I had going for me was Germany.  He was an excellent ally
even to the weaker member of the team.  I was pretty sure all along that I
didn't have to worry about him;  of course, I had to figure he wasn't going
to attack, since if he had I would have never survived.  I guess you have to
trust someone, even in Diplomacy....
   Once Italy was gone (with much help from France), all I had to do was
keep France pointed towards Turkey, and I could stay alive.  For whatever
reason, France agreed, and I managed to live.
   I guess my overall strategy since about Spring '02 was survival.  If I
could live 'til fall, I could fight in the Spring.
   As far as Germany's taking over the world, I probably would have helped
him out against France, but we had agreed to an alliance (of convenience
mostly), and I had just gotten a new job, and knew I wouldn't have much time
for this stuff.
   Thanks for the game, everyone.  It was interesting, and I am surprised
and happy that I could be here at the end.
