No way!  Take a major Title and you have prestige and influence out the
ying yang.  I was picking up major location and guild owners without breaking
a sweat!   Use your sidekick as a priest to do conversions and you're all
set.  While the Elven and Overlord factions can pump the prestige even
higher, the major title is more than good enough to get you picking up
locations and guild owners from turn 1.  I've gotten no additional titles
from my senior and I've done very well.

I still disagree, depends upon your team.  Somebody else on your team is
likely to buy a level 5 status that probably afflicts at level 3, therefore
you can pay for a level 5, or you can hook up with somebody who bought
a level 5 and get a level 3 free once the game starts.

As an influence monger I've picked up three marks from characters.  I didn't
get to pick them, but I didn't have to pay start up points for them either.

That's assuming you want to play a hero position, and I wouldn't argue
with that point, but as an influence monger I have 4 or 5 level 30ish
arcanists, 2 or 3 30ish level priests, and a number of guys with PCs in
the 50s and 35ish tactics unblessed with some good weapons.  Its not
for everybody, but you have to decide whether you want to have one character
who is the best, or lots of very good characters, I picked the latter,
and I'm happy with it.
