Perhaps I'm a child of our capitalist times, but it's my opinion that
the more choices people have in life in general, the better.

The two things I have noticed about pbem participants is this:
dedication, and intelligence. I think it's moot saying a pbem site is
unnecessary, or creates damage to the community: to me that sounds a
tad on the side of overreaction though I appreciate your opinion and
its basis.

It's worth pointing out that communities change over time: what was
acceptable, and established, and traditional before may not be
desirable any longer. The old pbem.com site has gone. It's not coming
back. It was built on reputation and even if I copied the site exact it
would never be the same. The community is moving on. Forum and site
designs from years ago are simply seen by new pbem gamers as 'archaic';
we have more and more people taking part in pbem who have grown up with
the Internet as opposed to learning about it in school. They are *not*
going to be satisfied with limited choice on a small number of sites
which haven't had a face lift for goodness knows how long.

*However* as I've said I come at this from a GM p.o.v. If all the
existing lists were known by everyone already, then how come I was
finding most of my players coming from Google searches?
You can't surely expect everyone in the world to know about one or two
sites so that if, one day, they decide to start pbeming they'll recall
your URL? The more portals there are out there *that cooperate and link
to one another* the better for pbeming. People are all about choice and
if they can't find what they're looking for they will, and rightly so,
look elsewhere.
