I can't coment on play by (snail) mail, because I have never played that
kind of game and know nothing about it. The same goes for email strategy
games, and so forth. You clearly know a great deal about these things,
and I'll take your word for it. But for play by email role-playing
games, fragmenting is a non-issue, and has been for as long as I have
been involved in PBEM role-playing (1990 or so). This is not a zero sum
game: more resources are better, and the resources that meet people's
needs the best will have the most people using them.

The biggest problem pbem roleplay gaming faces, in my opinion, is the
rise of MMOGs. But there's nothing any of us can do about that. What I
*can* do (and will continue to do, for as long as possible), is to
provide free, advertising-free services like RPG Library, the PBEM FAQ,
the PBEM News, and so forth. Giving back to the community, in the hope
that the community will survive. I have nothing but respect for people
who do the same.

And it doesn't bother that the feeling isn't always reciprocated: you
can't please everyone. Enough people appreciate it to make it worth doing.
