I am curious on how you intend to get internet mail
down onto a Windows based PC. Are you going to use
some sort of mail gateway? (Like PostalUnion?) Then
once you get the mail onto a PC how will you access
it? The only Windows Mail API I am aware of is MAPI,
which would force you to "code" in... Visual Basic,
(eww yuk).

As far as I can see you will be forced to use something
like an  NT gateway with PostalUnion, POP the mail off
of an Internet Provider to a Windows PC with an MSMail
Postoffice and use VB with MSMail's MAPI to read the
mail.

(Which then follows that you might
use an Access 2.0 as an Backend.)

This of course all borders on insanity if you intend
to handle 500+ users and "1000's of planets".

Once you leave the UNIX platform what are your
options for PBEM game design environments?

Is there some magical PBEM mail server that will
attach and detach letters from SMTP for you and
allow you to download player's orders with FTP?

(I am SMTP ignorant. Can users with "normal" rights
hijak letters out of their own mailboxs and download them?)
