This is the classic Macavelain (sp?) vs Sun Tsu dilema.

The great Chinese philosopher and author of the "Art of War",
Sun Tsu would probably council you that ultimately rival
states will comptete with you for resources and will always
potentialy be your enemy. Hence you should destroy so long
as the short term risk in battle is lower than the long term
risk of letting him live long enough to conquer you. Napolean
read Sun Tsu and this may have compelled him to attempt to
control all of Europe to ensure "safety" for his people.

Macavelli, the Italian Statesman and author of "The Prince"
would probably advise you that allies are worth more than
enemys and that your reputation as a "benefactor state" would
bring you still more allies and security. Where as a
reputation as a "predator state" would make neighboring
states suspicous of you which would bring you less security.
I beleive the Hadsburg (sp?) Empire which controled almost
all of Europe through stratigic Marriages and Alliances was
either influenced by or a model for the book "The Prince".

I'd say either kill him and keep it a secret or rescue him
and make sure everyone knows what a great guy you are. I
think by posting to this news group that you have already
made the choice.
