I wouldn't draw any generalizations from looking at what ABM did to
BSE. BSE is a game which needs a large amount of data input, a large
amount of hand-moderation, and a large amount of programmer
maintenance on a large and crufty program. In short, it's an expensive
game to moderate, and tough to make a profit on.

You can tell that ABM learned a lot from it, though. It's a Crime! and
Monster island are both much, much cheaper to operate -- much less
keypunching, no hand moderation, and probably have much larger profit
margins. And when ABM found out that Mike could make much more money
distributing Magic cards than running BSE, it's no surprise that they
didn't pay much attention to BSE. I'm not defending what they did, but
it's not an indictment of the PBM industry at large.
