Yes and no.  It helps to gain free levels in spells and some skills
simply by using them, however the skills and spells do not work too well
until around level 3 or so at the lower levels.  If you are creating an
elf or another race spell caster and wish to be dependant upon spells
cast away as much as possible!

For a starting character...  I would say one or two hits tops.

Antar or Barstow.  I would advise against Ciston until you know the
system better.

Not that I know of...  However, if one DOES exist, let me know!! :)

You gain honor.  Useful for some deities, roll playing, but not too much
else as far as I know.

Try not to over encumber yourself.  Basically try to keep your weapon and
armor weight to about strength - 10.  This will keep you unencumbered and
keep you from exhausting too quickly.
