The purpose of the Portable Host Project is to develop VGA Planets
programs and utilities that are
high-quality, fast, bug-intolerant, and portable to hardware
systems other than IBM PC's. All of our
programs are freeware, which means there is no cost to either hosts
or players, but our programs
are not in the public domain (i.e., they are copyrighted).

By "bug-intolerant" we mean that we try to make our programs as
bug-free as possible, and in the
event that bugs are discovered, we fix them as quickly as possible.

Our main program is PHOST, a portable replacement for the HOST.EXE
program that comes with
VGA Planets. We have versions of PHOST that are designed to emulate
both major HOST
versions, that is, HOST 3.15 and HOST 3.2. Jump to the PHOST

pride and joy. All of the other products and information that you
will find at this site are somehow
related to PHOST.

PHOST is ideal if you want to move your hosting platform from a DOS
system to a workstation,
such as a Sun Sparc or HP-PA workstation. PHOST runs on 13
different hardware/software
platform combinations (including, of course, PC's running DOS). If
the words 'crontab' and
'procmail' or 'mailagent' don't scare you, then you are probably
getting a twinkle in your eye thinking
about how to put those words and PHOST together for a hosting setup
that requires no babysitting.
