A max of 80 or so players.  Creating turns for Galaxy of a bigger size
becomes too time consuming.

The size depends on the number of players.  I like home planets to be
atleast 25 ly appart.  So the size would be about sqrt(80)*25 = 230 ly
on each side.

Planets:  3 home planets (1 - size 1000, 2 - size 400)
          6 good planets in a radious of 15 ly from the home planet
          and 6 smaller planets per player scattered around the galaxy.

It would be fun to have a group game. Two big teams against each other.

One of the problems to solve in that case is the original configuration
of the planets.  Should each side group together in one halve of the
galaxy, or should all players be randomly scattered over the galaxy?
or a combination of these two?

( Another possibility is to have a tournament of 1 on 1 games.
