I haven't really played many galaxy games, but as for Vga Planets, I
     can answer a bit of info for that.

A couple good places for Vga Planets info are EfNet IRC channel
     #vgaplanets, and the newsgroup alt.games.vga-planets.

Turns take variable amount of time to do turns.  In the beginning
     you are talking about a few minutes, and if they game goes quite
     long it can take an hour or more to run commands on 100s of ships
     and planets, but there are tools to speed up the process.

Games are usually easy to find.  There as several automated hosting
     services, and many hosts that run one or two games.

The only real way to become overwhelmed is to take on too many games
     at one time.  If you start with one or two games, you'll quickly
     learn most of the basics, and the newgroup and irc people are quite
     decent about answering questions, if you have them.

As for if you will be easily beaten, if you gt into novice games most
     you should have a fair chance of survival.  If you jump into a
     advanced or expert game (type of players in the game), you probably
     will have a bit of difficulty if you don't form an alliance with
     someone.
