There are PBeMs in every concievable category of game...roleplaying,
wargames, sports, etc. It's hard to make a recommendation without knowing
what types of games you like to play. For a good general list, try the PBM
list at http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/pbm.html. There is a nicely-organized
list of several hundred games at this site.

Bear in mind that many free PBeMs are ephemeral operations which tend to
fold when people lose interest. Some, of course, have stuck around for a
long time, but you can't guarantee that this will happen. Good luck!

It shouldn't for most games, but bear in mind that some games (usually
wargames) have graphical clients--these programs are generally only for
Windows or DOS.
