[Galaxy] Gunboat games? From: dkass@cco.caltech.edu (David Michael Kass) Date: Thu, 10 Sep 1998 00:00:00 +0000 Has anyone ever thought about the possibility of gunboat games (I'm taking the term from the Dip community--a game with no communication betwee players)? While I enjoy strategic space conquest games (like Galaxy, or VGAP), I rarely find myself having the time to conduct the necessary diplomacy to feel I am playing well. After thinking about it, I realized that Galaxy might be particularly well suited to such games since 1) the game itself doesn't require diplomacy (unlike say Phoenix); and 2) there would only need to be minor modifications to the game itself. The things that would have to be changed are to disable the ability to name planets; the ability to name shiptypes (or at least keep their name local to that player--call them ship1, ship2... to all other players); and the ability to generate press. The addition of a CONCEDE <player> might be useful for ending the game before total conquest (it has not effect on the game itself, but if all players have either input a CONCEDE command for the same player or have been eliminated, the moderator ends the game and declares the winner). -- David Kass Caltech Grad Student E-Mail: dkass@cco.caltech.edu Planetary Science I wonder what circle of Hell is reserved for spammers...
