For playing a strategic war game, I think the PBEM format works quiet well.
For the games I run (at www.islandnet.com/~dgreenin/emg.htm), the format I
use is to provide a text report that can be printed out and used to plot and
plan your turn from and then a GUI to do the actual turn in and generate a
set of commands from.  With turns running once a week, there is plenty of
time to do diplomacy, plan a turn, enter the turn, and hand it in.  With the
turn run every week though, I find that interest and anticipation is
maintained throughout the week on the game.  So to my mind it reduces the
problems of snail mail PBM by just compressing the time frame on everthing.

As a gamer who grew up playing board games(Diplomacy, 3rd Reich), but who now
can't find the time or people to play, PBEM is a way to coninue the board game
style of game.

The current crop of RTS games for the PC are a totally different style of
game, one that doesn't interest me.  Real time games that do interest me are
racing, air combat, etc.
