It has been a long time since I've played Galaxy, but I've never used
an advanced tool. The tools I used were: an ascii mapper, a distance
calculator, a weapon/shield strength calculator, and an 'effective
production' calculator. I've never used a battle simulator, nor a cargo
distribution tool.

Nevertheless, I've played a major role in Galaxy 7, being the largest
empire for half the game. I lost because I didn't have enough time to
react to an invasion. :-(

Sometimes I wonder if I would be able to survive in one of the newer
galaxy variants. Too bad I don't have the time to test it.

At the time I played Galaxy, I was a student, and galaxy was one of the
first PBEM games I played. Nowadays, I play commercial games (Olympia,
Eldritch). The availability of simple, free games has convinced me to
try commercial PBEMs.
