It was decided for me when I was named. My great- grandmother Calista was the first Sureshot, given that name by the first Baron Aiglenoir himself after the Battle of the Cork. As sure as I wear her name, I was destined to wear her Medallion ofhonor. But if I could have decided? Of course I'd be an Eagle. I told you I started with her name... but I sponged up her memories and maybe some of her soul, sitting in her lap during the long winters of my childhood, listening while she re-lived her adventures with the great man she always called"Cap'n Ax." You want to hear one of those stories now, standing here in the mess line? OK, here's my favorite...how the Skylarks became theSureshots: *********************** Aiglenoir's Rangers prowled through the shadowy under-canopy of the forest. Though the mudspattered courier clearly thought this a suicide mission, none of us believed it. That wily Cap'n Ax had gotten us into and out of more impossible fixes than even our quartermaster could count, and this was just one more. Wasn't it? The orders had come from old King Mark Himself, frantically mustering forces in the flatlands far below and behind us. He needed another five days before the Second Corps could join him, and even then they'd be exhausted from their forced march. Three more days after that until the Home Guard would make it up from Crownheart (those fat farmers couldn't march faster than a plow horse, even with EVERYBODY'S lives depending on them!). And we all knew the goblins needed only three more to make it down through Thermopolis Pass, then they'd swarm out like ants to devour Bereny once and for all. But the Rangers were still NORTH of the pass, where we'd been living off the land and hamstringing greensnouts for weeks. So the King's laconic order came up -- "Buy us time." Cap'n Ax said it better when we mustered at first light - just like he always did. "Keep the cork in this bottle for a week, troops, and old Tredach himself will pour your first round when weall get home!" And who would be the wax on the cork? The Rangers' elven archers, of course! Led by me, Calista Skylark (as I was still called back then). No matter how good the humans got -- and Axel Aiglenoir was the best -- they could never move as quickly and quietly through woods as elves. So the Cap'n sent us out double quick, to recon the High Chief's advance guard, and see how far those green berserkers had run ahead of the main body this time. The Ax had worked out one of his "force multiplier" diversions that he figured could buy us the first of those 8 days the King needed, before the hordes ever got up out of the woods and into the pass (he never showed doubt we could hold down the cork that long, even with the greensnouts shaking the bottle for all they were worth!) Aiglenoir's plan recognized that the berserkers always run ahead of the greenies' main force during a march, in order to get first crack at villagers and whatever else doesn't move fast enough. We elves would let them trot by, then make a feint against the main body to give the rest of the Rangers time to maul the advance guard. Then we'd fade back into the trees while Cap'n Ax rushed up to the first of the chokepoints along the higher ground. "Skylark," he'd chuckled, "this time you leave the early worms to us, and peck at the ones that come behind. I'll make it up to you at the next chokepoint." (Cap'n had plotted good defensive blocks all the way up to the pass itself, figuring to leapfrog slowly backwards, forcing the hordes to make uphill frontal assaults at every point. Last was the hamlet of Thermopolis, sitting atX-Spanska: Yesfamous hotsprings. After that it was all down hill and wider from there to where our King would be waiting)... ...So my gals and I got up into position in the trees on both sides of the big trail, even before that first swarm went by. They were so eager for booty -- or so over-confident, or maybe just so green stupid -- they never even scouted the trees to notice that they were being watched, let alone targeted by several score of the best bows in Bereny. Then we waited, praying to Shanna that the main body would lag by at least the hour it would take those first goblins to reach the Rangers' ambush. Perched squinting through the branches to watch the sun moving slowly up into the sky, I knew we were in luck. I prayed again that the Ax had conjured up another miracle. When the main body finally clambered up, I realized the Goddess had truly heard her daughter. Right behind a showy brace of wolf-riders came the High Chief himself! Sitting on a tacky golden throne atop a chariot that must have been as big as a river barge. He was pegging daggers absent-mindedly at the prisoners nailed to his chariot, while growling out something to several very attentive big greensnouts who trotted alongside. He might as well have had a bullseye painted on the middle of his big ugly chest. I gave the little whistle to let the gals know I wanted that first shot myself, drew back my bow whispering my strongest prayer, and feathered the big bastard right in the brisket with one of my lucky silver arrows! Followed, before he could even fall over, by several more from the treetops around me. The trotting goblins froze a minute, then looked up into the trees, then back at High Chief Hockspit (or whatever his name was). Then they started a loud keening (never heard anybody that big scream so high, before nor since). Then they rushed the barge and started to strip it bare!*** After we sat in disbelief for what might have been ages, I whistled redeploy and we sliX-Spanska: Yeswithout so much as a challenge from the green swarm. It was as if I'd shot the head off a snake.... We made our way back fine and met up with Cap'n Ax, who'd butchered those berserkers without losing a single Ranger.*** We all hunkered at that first chokepoint for nearly a tenday, while our scouts reported big fights amongst the greenies -- busy electing the next High Chief, I suppose. During that time several green waves did rise up to splash themselves against us -- and all flowed back red. When we couldn't stand the smell of rotting greensnouts any longer we mustered out and marched down to meet the King, who indeed opened the royal wine cellars and poured the firstround!*** That's how Axelnoir's Rangers made the miracle of the Battle of the Cork. Cap'n Ax became Baron Axel Aiglenoir (at least to everybody but the Rangers), we all got to be "BEEF", and I got a new last name -- Sureshot. The same one you bear, littlest Calista, along with my first name as well. ****************************** I can't swear every word's true, but my family's still called Sureshot, not Skylark, and the strongest daughters all become Eagles. And I'll kill anyone who claims my ancient great-grandmare told me false!Lady Calista SureshotElven Warrior Maiden Sergeant, Bereny Eagles Elite Fighters ____________________________________________________________________________ ___ ____________________________________________________________________________ ___ Message: 23 Date: Sun, 04 Apr 1999 16:17:34 -0500 From: "Daniel L.
