The Book of the Order of Chivalry From: lindahl@pbm.com (Greg Lindahl) Date: Sun, 11 Apr 1999 00:00:00 +0000 Since I don't think this book has been mentioned here before... http://www.lcc.net/~startgrp/boc.html A short excerpt from the webpage: Translated into modern English by Robert Adams from William Caxton's The Book of the Ordre of Chyvalry (in late Middle English) as translated from a French version of Ramn Lull's Le Libre del Orde de Cauayleria. Lull's The Book of the Order of Chivalry, which focused on chivalry as a way of life and offered instruction toward that end, is the most influential Medieval discussion of chivalry known. Translated into French, Castilian, Scots and English (by Caxton), it was widely read and is generally recognized as the classic account of knighthood. Ramn Lull (c. 1232-1316?) was a Catalan philosopher born on the island of Majorca at Palma of a wealthy, noble family. A knight, he married at an early age, had children, and was made a seneschal (an official in charge of domestic arrangements and the administration of servants) at the court of King James II of Aragon. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For ordering details and excerpts of all the book chapters, see the webpage mentioned above. I have no connection with the guys selling it; I just thought it looked good, and a spin through my library reveals no other "modern English" version of this book, although there was a facsimile of the middle english published in 1971. -- gb Referenced By Up
