The Colonies From: jonmmorris@aol.comnospam (JonMMorris) Date: Sat, 29 May 1999 00:00:00 +0000 Looking for long memories here - does anyone remember a game called "The Colonies"? I can't remember their names but they lived in Northern Virginia and the game existed around 1981/82. Aside from postal Diplomacy in the mid-70's, this was my first introduction to Play-by-Mail. I think I learned of their game from an ad in The Dragon though I could be wrong. Each player chose a Eurpoean nationality (with inherent advantages and disadvantages), bought a shipload of stuff and people of different occupations, and their ship landed somewhere in the New World. It was very similar to Sid Meier's Colonization and I'm curious if the they had anything to do with his game or if Sid had ever seen The Colonies. Sad to say, they ran the setup, turn 1, and then, six months later, I got a letter explaining that the two co-creators had "had a disagreement" and the game was kaput, here was my money back. Pretty common stuff for free PbM and the postal Diplomacy hobby was/is notorious for orphaned games, but I was disappointed that a "commercial game" (I call it that because it cost $5 a turn and the moderators paid for ads to recruit players) would fold up that way. By first brush with this wonderful hobby/industry. *** Remove "nospam" from the e-mail address to reply.
