[AD] Steel Fury Playtest From: "Kerry Harrison" <kerry@io.com> Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 00:00:00 +0000 STEEL FURY (beta playtest) Using the same game system as 'DungeonWorld', a brand new open-ended Sci-Fi PBM game! STARTS 27th JUNE 1999 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Basic Orientation Hey, recruit. Get over here. You only get a brief intro into this gig and then you'll be out there in the field. So listen to me, right? The universe has gone to hell and we're the only one's can save it, kid. It's a big responsibility, but if somebody is gonna kick those lunatics outta' space, then it's you and me. Corporations You know the drill, kid. There's a whole messa' Corporations out there trying ta' salvage what they can of the world. 'Course, our Corps are the Good Guys, most of them others are bad 'uns. All sides think the other's as crazy as a loon and who knows? Maybe they're all right. The profit war's been raging for... damn... sixty Earth years now and it's made one hell of a mess. But while there's a profit to be made we ain't gonna let the other guys make the score. We got our Mechs. Hundreds and hundreds of mechanical war machines that we use to fight our dirty battles for us. It's a hell of a situation, kid, but we aren't here to ask why, we're here to win! For the corporation and the Good Guys! Basic Equipment Course, robots don't pilot themselves, do they? Not any good, at least. They need a skilled recruit, like yerself, to tell 'em what to do. Now you've signed up, you start with control of three robots. You gotta' send 'em out there into one of the war zones and blow the enemy to skrag, salvage useful stuff or to follow a mission set by the Command Tower! You get to pick which three basic robot designs you want and then you get to kit 'em out from the Tech Stores with gizmo's and weapons. You'll have some buddies with 'ya, too. See those guys over there... near the ammo dump? That's 'yer pals. We'll send a team of 'ya out for your first mission. Victory Now all 'ya gotta do is get out there and do the business. I hope 'ya got the stones for it, kid. Each of these little conflicts is a steppin' stone to winning the war for the future of Mankind and setting our Corporation at the top of the ladder! We got a way of life to protect, ain't we? Got to make the future safe for our kids! It's up to you now, buddy. The future of the universe is in 'yer hands. It's a big responsibility, but I know you ain't gonna let us down. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Earth - The Far Future Mankind has retreated to the stars leaving a wasteland behind, a smoldering ruin of a world, wracked by radiation, chaos and death. But profit is a dangerous master and the largest corporations are not done with the ravaged planet. The Game Steel Fury is an open-ended Sci-Fi game of robotic combat, fierce competition and player politics. Each player controls a quantity of 'mechanoids' (giant robots), initially limited to three each but expandable later as per each players wishes. There are various different ways to play the game and each player chooses their own goals. It is possible to get involved in huge fierce battles, to explore and chart new regions, to salvage and trade valuable goods found in the wasteland, or any combination you like the sound of. One of the most interesting features of the game is that it is set against a backdrop of two rival (warring) corporations. All American players will be in one faction, all European players in the other! Australians will be neutrals... able to choose their sides as they wish. The Mechs Mechs are the major playing pieces in the game and as such are fully customizable. You start with a named frame and from that you can bolt on hardware, software, gadgets, armour and weapons to your hearts content. The only limitations are the amount of credits you have to spend and the allowances of the frame you chose (some mechs are designed to be combat models, while others are better for other purposes.) As the game progresses, successful Mechs will gain additional credits and be able to upgrade and make repairs. The Playtest The Playtest launches on 27th June 1999. Signups are being taken *now*. In the first week of July you will receive forms and information so that you can choose your starting 'Mechs Please note: we *only* want reliable playtesters. If that's not you... don't sign up! The playtest will be run at *half price* ($2.50 per turn for 3 Mechs). There are two ways to sign up, 'Standard' ($10.00 buys the playtest rules and first 2 turns) or 'Extended' ($30.00 buys the rules & full 12-turn playtest!)
