But, if I were to do that, then I might not get what I want out of
this... I'm naive and inexperienced. Rich is not. Things that I want, Rich
will inevitably convince me that I really don't or that it would be too
complex or simply not possible (nothing against you, Rich... that's just the
way things usually happen). I did take his suggestion and look through his
developmental notes and the playtest discussion archives. Naive as I am, I
want to take a different approach.
    BTW... this is not going to be a variant on Olympia. I had always
thought that a strategy game must be played as if the player were the leader
of a nation and had control over every aspect. Exposure to Olympia's
documentation and the postings on usenet indirectly broke that chain in my
thinking that held me to that path and allowed me to branch out and really
be open to new ideas... I would never have thought of writing a game in that
manner, so my game was thus inspired by Rich's (as Rich's was by the dead
game T'nyc), but it will not be a clone or even a major variant. The major
concepts that I have drawn from Olympia have to do with the method Rich
chose to cap the geometric growth of player factions. Alot of the
limitations that Rich imposed on Olympia to limit its complexity would have
to be worked around and many, many things would have to be drawn up from
scratch. You couldn't simply alter the existing code to fit what I want to
do. I want to make a game that _I_ could love to play, and my demands from a
game are difficult to live up to. This is more of a labor of love, and I
have to be in control of the development process and the final product, so
even though Rich could be a huge asset to the project I can't offer it to
him any more than I could offer him my soul. Not that I would turn down any
assistance, mind you, but to offer it to someone else is not an option.
    This is probably too long and, since I'm so tired that I'm having
trouble not falling face first onto my keyboard, not getting at exactly what
my initial point was. Oh well. I'm going to post this and sleep, now. Thanks
