Imagine Wrestling, only with weapons...

Mystic Arena is a Play-By-e-Mail game in which you play a Gladiator on
his (or her) way to glory, victory, and untold riches. But it is not
primarily a fighting game. Mystic Arena has much in common with american
wrestling, namely that there is an enormenous show taking place all
around the fights, and more often than not, the show, the interviews,
the events outside the arena, are more important than the fights
themselves.

With time, your character advances, learns and accumulates money/gold
with which to buy more and better equipment. Occasionally, extraordinary
wounds or destroyed equipment will set you back, but with just a bit of
persistence, you might reach your goal - loved by the fans, on top of
the league, or whatever else you strive for.
