Judith Procter From: Ken Mulholland <Ken@timepatternspbm.demon.co.uk> Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000 00:00:00 +0000 You might like to know that Judith Proctor (she of the late lamented excellent GM of Delender est Cathargo who had to give up GMing because of ill health) has achieved the feat of getting a letter published in New Scientist (issue 2252 19th August 2000). Concerning speed limits on roads. Well (humm aren't you the smug one?) if you are still on this forum, Judith, may I as a Reader in Transport Management (retired) say the following: The TRRL design roads on the basis that almost all drivers do obey the speed limit plus 10mph. The effect of flash-bang-cameras is normally to cause drivers to break before going through them and then to accelerate to 'normal speed' afterwards if for no other reason than to protest against nanny state. Research shows that the net effect of this is to increase pollution from the breaking/accelleration cycle. Rear end collisions have also been known when drivers have suddenly come across the give away pecks in the road and slowed down abruptly to nanny state speeds. The cartoon that accompanies your letter is also apposite. Although I never conciously drive while over the alcohol limit I am aware that to drive at the speed limit does attract attention from the fuzz and is not to be recommended. Ken. Up
