Terminology From: MindShift Design <teammsd@mindshiftdesign.com> Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 00:00:00 +0000 This was also posted to the email list at PBMDesign@egroups.com ... -- I've just been thinking about some of the terminology that's used in gaming these days. There always seems to be arguments as to what a PBM game is - does email fall into the category as it's still mail though electronic. The more I thought about it, I came to the conclusion that there are really two types of games played in any gaming circle - real time and delayed processing. Real time games can include games you play on a local network with friends because you interface with the game engine or processor in real time. This can also include tabletop gaming played with your buddies on a Saturday night. Delayed processing games tend to require orders to be submitted and processed at set periods either by a game engine, or a GM. This includes PBM games, wargames run on servers or RPGs played by mailing list. I've never been a fan of using "offline" and "online" terms for games. Many "offline" games use "online" tools to deliver orders and reports. As gaming goes forward, I think there will be a redifining of terminology to determine gaming and this is my own view on it.
