Arthur Rimbuad, as quoted in "The Sunless Citadel" adventure The never-ending wind blows across the trackless grass filled tundra of Icewind Dale, carrying with it hopes and dreams and fears and nightmares of beast and man alike. Seductive beyond your will to resist, the call to glory, the call of freedom, the call of riches beyond your wildest dreams have brought you North, beyond the great Spine of the World Mountains, to the capital of this most remote of places: Bryn Shander. Icewind Dale is everything dark myth and shining legend suggested it would be: a haven of barbarians, ruffians, thieves, mages, mystics, and druids, with monsters and magic aplenty. All living together -- more or less harmoniously -- for mutual protection. All but the newest of residents -- those yet to have confronted Auril's wrath that is the Dale's winter -- live by a simple credo: "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer." Your early attempts at wealth and glory have failed. The caravan which brought you North has departed, leaving you stranded. Those who rode north with you, those you had come to trust have chosen to travel on in the relative comfort of a guarded caravan, as opposed to living the rough and dangerous life of an adventurer. You are alone, without friends or allies, living off (or should one say drinking down) the last of your life savings. A crystal clear midsummer morning brings the sound of a town crier, calling out the tenday's news and proclamations, waking you from your sleep (reverie if you are of the Tel'Quessir). Having grown accustomed to the ritual over the past two tendays, your mind begins to wander as the news is delivered only to snap back at the offer of a job. Manpower is in short supply in Icewind Dale, most able-bodied men with training in organized violence being needed within the walls and boroughs of the Ten Towns themselves. Adventurers, those willing to risk life and limb for glory and wealth (or of course, those seeking a quick and quiet departure with a bit of coin to boot), are needed to fill in the ranks, to range out to the smaller villages and hamlets scattered throughout the Dale and up onto the slopes of Kelvin's Cairn. Those interested, the crier calls, should report to the Speaker's House and ask for an appointment with Cassius, Speaker of Bryn Shander, Leader of the Council of Ten Towns. And so, with little hesitation, you find yourself standing before the largest building in Icewind Dale and for the first time in many days, you feel your heart beating and adrenaline rushing. This is, after all what brought you North.... The game begins with the Sunless Citadel commercial adventure and will continue on at the module's completion using both custom and commercial adventures. Players are encouraged to check out the character generation rules on the web for specific information. [ This is a new entry for the PBM List.
