He embarked on a grand scheme to bring the his political rivals under control by harnessing the power of Eltabbar, a demon lord of untold power who aided the Red Wizards centuries ago in throwing off the yoke of the Empire of Mulhorand. Through the use of two powerful artefacts, Thakorsil's Seat and the Death Moon Orb, Szass Tam sought to enslave Eltabbar through the ritual of twin burnings. However, his plan was foiled by a brave band of adventurers sent by the Simbul, and the ceremomy failed, releasing an enraged Eltabbar. Too weakened by the complexities of the ritual to escape Eltabbar's wrath, Szass Tam was forced to fight him. However, even a necromancer as great as Tam could not defeat an abyssal ruler as powerful as the one he had unleashed. Overcome with anger upon realising he would not survive the battle, Tam decided he would take them broke his ancient staff of power, releasing a huge explosion of magical energy forced Eltabbar back to the Abyss and destroyed Tam's Citadel upon the Thaymount. Tam was believed slain. However, recent evidence has suggested that Tam was not destroyed but banished into the planes via the same dimensional rift that sucked Eltabbar from the material world. Typically, Tam has counted his blessings and decided that his time in the magical outer planes is the perfect opportunity to enhance his powers so that when he returns to the Realms his rulership of Thay and the lands surrounding it are assured. On the other hand, Eltabbar has not forgiven Thay for betraying him, imprisoning him beneath the city of the same name after he helped them break free from the oppression of Mulhorand. He seeks to to reawaken a millenia old era of conquest, starting with Thay and then the rest of Toril. Between these two evil protoganists lies an unlikely hero. Keva is a marquis cambion, the cursed progeny of one of the great tanar'ri and the brave spirit of some poor human priestess sacrificed to the Abyss by evil powers. Mannered, charming and droll, Keva skillfully conceals a soul in torment, where the pure light of his mother's goodness struggles to climb forth from the dank miasma spawned by a demon lord. An able warrior, an accomplished thief and a minor spell-user, Keva is the leader of raucous parade of planar down-outs in a mercenary band fighting in the eternal conflict of the Blood War. Currently on the payroll of Eltabbar's legions, he will become entangled in the spiralling chain of events as Eltabbar and Szass Tam head towards a collision to shake the very fabric of existence.
