Last-Update: 2001Mar23 Keywords: free, open-ended, email, human, modern, rpg Description: Tropical Hideaway is a PbEM role-play, set on a tropical island somewhere off the North Queensland coast of Australia. The characters will be the staff of the resort that exists on the southern tip of the island and gives the role-play its name Tropical Hideaway. Role-play will be free form and the preference will be for character-driven gaming rather than plot-driven; players can feel free to start their own story threads. If a moderator feels that such a thread is in bad taste, or doesnt fit for some other reason, the player will be quietly advised of this, along with the reason why, and given the chance to fix it. The basis of the game will be the interaction between characters; while the resort certainly has guests, their actions and existence will be glossed over in favor of character play. Socialization, intrigue and romance will all be encouraged. While competition between characters is nearly inevitable, any results will be arrived at by discussion between the moderators. The resort shares the island with a small township that gets supplies once a fortnight from the mainland via the mail-plane, an antiquated Dakota DC-3. The airstrip is also used by the Flying Doctor service from the mainland, in the case of a medical emergency on the island. North of the resort and the township is rainforest; the island is some ten kilometers (a little over six miles) long, with a secluded camping-ground at the northern tip. This camping-ground can be reached by walking-track or shallow-draft boat; as the island is smack in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef, coral reefs abound. However, there are some deep channels; tour catamarans and dive boats use these. Activities at the resort include scuba diving or snorkeling, Jet Ski hire or surfing, or just lazing on the beach. There is a mini-mall, which includes a McDonalds, a dive shop and several souvenir shops. The three places one can go to drink are a hotel-type bar for the older set, a nightclub (open from seven to seven) for the younger set, and a bar that opens on to the beach, for anyone; this last specializes in tropical-theme drinks. All in all, Tropical Hideaway is a great place to be, whether you're staying there or working there. Come and see! [ This is a new entry for the PBM List.
