And by and by word of his great power spread throughout the globe, and men rejoiced at the wonder of his name. But the Church did not rejoice, for it saw imagined evil within him. And the Church sent out messengers to find the man, and beguile him with offers of power and fortune that they might destroy the evil they saw in him. But the man refused, saying �Why would I trust in a church founded upon the death of my brother, and which did nothing to prevent that death?� And the Church saw the truth of his words, and sent strong men to destroy him. And yet when they came to him he hung his head and spake, �Know that though I will die this day, I will give my power to men who will continue my task. And they will someday destroy this Church.� And then he wept for mankind. Over the globe his words were heard, and people heard him speak in their own tongue, and they said �What is this wonder?� But some people knew what the wonder was, and as the men sent to destroy him did so, at the very moment of that death, the people who knew the wonder felt something enter them. And some few of these people were in the Church, and they knew of the imagined evil, and they believed themselves to be defiled and made less than human, and they begged the Church to put them out of their misery, and to save mankind from their brethren. But the Church refused, and said �You will expiate your sin by destroying that of your brethren, only then shall you be redeemed in the eyes of God.� And the ones who received the power knew it, the pyromancers and the healers and the empaths and all the mages and their kin. And they were aware of how to use it, and of what they must do. ----- Set after the last great war, year unknown. The rebuilding of the cities means that effectively the lifestyle is similar to that of modern day with a touch of cyberpunk.
