I'm just playing my own games at the moment. Eressea and Anarchy Online.
Free games are a mixed bag. Some run forever, longer than any commercial
games, others fizzle out after just a few turns. I'd recommend joining
established ones that have been around for a few years with the same GM.
Yes, they exist.

Apart from playing Eressea (a much-improved descendant of Atlantis), we're
running three non-free games on a slightly modified codebase, the latest one
with predefined alliances among players that battle for domination. This
looks to be the most fun scenario yet, because the players have a clear
goal, they are working together right from the start, and the whole thing
has a well-defined end, unlike most regular Atlantis games, which usually
fizzle out at some poit because more and more of the old players stop
playing. In Eressea for example, we've got a huge aging problem because the
oldest factions are playing for over 6 years now, and there are hardly any
of their old companions still alive.

If I had the time to play something else, I'd try some of the Madhouse games
(to steal ideas, of course), and maybe a Space Empires game like Stars! or
VGA Planets. I'm definitely finished with Atlantis 4, I still haven't seen a
single game of A4 that's even close to being well-balanced.
