Good point. I would imagine there would be a similar regulation outside
the UK. Essentially the UK has laws governing what sort of information
pertaining to individuals can be held by companies. If you are going to
hold personal information (snail mail address, phone number etc - not
sure about email addresses) for commercial purposes you are required to
register the fact with a government agency. In addition you need to
inform customers that data about them will be held on computer. Ideally
one should give them the opportunity to request that you do not do so.
Failure to either register or inform your customers is illegal. Thing is
loads of people sort of ignore all this ...
