IRC-#VGAPLANETS-FAQ From: oddjob10@lycos.com (nycop) Date: Tue, 10 Jun 2003 00:37:09 +0000 VGA Planets Internet Relay Chat(IRC) Channel I have noted that there are the normal bunch of regulars in the #vgaplanets channel, however, very few others show up. As such, I have decided to resurrect the old #vgaplanets IRC FAQ, update when I get new info and hopefully remember to post it regularly. Now on with the blantant ad plug. The IRC channel is open 24hrs 7days a week..its THE place to meet your allies/teammates/fellow game players and game hosts. It has been a hangout for over 7 years with people from all over the world logging in at at their respective times. There is always a major game just for the regular channel members and usually always a game in development. If the channel is quiet, and people are sleeping or playing TRNs just hang around, it gets very lively. Currently, mIRC seems to be the most used windows IRC client program. This is the first client listed, however, once I get information on the other clients I will add them to this list. Also, included are quick instructions, for those who may already be used to IRC and simply need the channel and network info and then a larger set of instructions for those who aren't familiar with IRC to use. mIRC - Quick Instructions Start mIRC Click on the Options Icon Select Connect In the IRC Servers list select EFnet Choose one of the servers (EFnet: EU, NO, Homelien is usually a good option if you are having trouble connecting to any other ones nearer to you.) Click on Connect to IRC Server Once connected click on the channel folders Icon Click on Add to bring up the Add channel box Enter #vgaplanets in Channel Password should be blank Description is not necessary, but I use VGA Planets Click on the Network and select EFnet If you select Auto-join channel on connect each time you connect to EFnet mIRC will automatically open a window for the #vgaplanets channel. mIRC - Full Instructions You will need to download, install, and configure mIRC. To install mIRC you must first download it. mIRC's download page is http://www.mirc.com/get.html If you have not downloaded software before or just want to make sure that you do this correct, click on the How To Install link on the mIRC site. http://www.mirc.com/install.html This page shows step by step instructions for downloading, installing, and using mIRC. You can continue to use those instructions once you have it downloaded to install mIRC, or follow the instructions below. mIRC comes as a self-extracting EXE. To install mIRC run the program, and follow the instructions in the dialog boxes that appear. Once mIRC has been installed, start it and select options. Once the menu comes up you can enter some information about yourself. I should note due to occasional spamming, most users don't their real name or email address, and some even use the space to show their web pages. I personally use "Hi There", and "Yes" for full name and email address. Select a nick and an alternate nick. After than you can follow the Quick Instructions to set up the channels list and server information. It should be noted that sometimes the nick you choose will be in use. If you join and can't use the nick you chose the screen will tell you that the nick is in use, at which time you you will see "/nick ". Simply enter a new nick at that point. This will continue till a valid unused nick is selected. JAVA - IRC Shadow has also made a java applet on his site to access the channel. To use this you can simply go to http://www.echocluster.com and click on the "chat" link. Here a list of updated EFnet servers http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/networks/efnet.txt If you seem to have a lot of trouble connecting to many of these servers, you should see our help file for connection problems at: http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/networks/connectprob.html If you can provide information for other IRC clients please email it to me at the_one_relic@yahoo.com so I can add it to this.
