Long ago it was a peaceful island where war was virtually unknown It was too small for the invading armies of the mainland to bother with, and held no known resources that would make it a coveted spot. So they were left in peace while the rest of the world went on. Elf and Human, animals and plant dwelt together in peace and made the land rich and fertile. They were the people of the old ways and the old magic. Trade was done between the island and the other lands, and travel was done freely. Strangers were not unknown on the island and indeed were welcomed for the news they brought. Then the wars came. Armies from the east sweeping across the lands, conquering, destroying. Even Isaut was taken over, its people pressed into service for the new rulers, Their lives became more difficult and penalties were laid upon them. No longer did they work to support themselves and their families, but to pay the taxes imposed by the one calling himself the Overlord. In time the mainland forces pushed back the invading armies and civilizations began to prosper again. When his forces fell, the Overlord retreated to Isaut, tightening his grip on the people there. It was his only kingdom now, and he had to make it prosper, to build his armies once again. He never left. Hating the elves, the Overlord tightened his grip, enslaving the race. Humans, rich and poor alike were freeborn, and while they were taxed and pressed into the Overlord�s service, they were his subjects. It has been fifteen hundred years since the wars, Overlords have risen and fallen, the mantle of rulership passed to the heirs, some worse, some better than others as the march of time has settled the kingdom into a prospering society. Cities have risen, the most popular if these is the capital, the port City of Sharmor, land has been reseeded and the country is at peace. It is still somewhat isolated, though the port cities have a bustling trade with incoming ships, The interior remains undisturbed by the few offlanders who venture from the cities. The armies grow larger by the year, the human soldiers making more frequent sweeps of the land, watching the village folk closer than ever before. Outposts grow and elven boys are trained as foot soldiers and front-line fighters for the Overlord�s army, while the women learn to make themselves as unnoticed as possible to escape becoming a plaything for bored soldiers and pray they may live their lives in peace.
