I just want to add that there do seem to be some promising new designs.
KJC's rewrite of BSE (which they're calling Phoenix) impresses me:

At Flagship, we've expanded the range of games that we cover but there's still
plenty going on in the Realm of Turn-Based Play...

Maybe it's a mistake to envisage a whole range of games using the same software?
Better to perfect just one, and learn from its inevitable shortcomings?
