Wanderer Games' .LORDS OF THE EARTH/ Game IV Turn #2 Industrial Stage Zero The Medieval Era 1110 Anno Domini ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Quote of the Month: Heaven comes to he who waits, but I know I'm getting nowhere. And all the deeds of yesterday have really helped to pave my way... Watch Me Bleed, I can Bleed Forever! - R. Orzabal Important schtuff from the TOP: Around 12:35AM, Saturday Morning, a player came up to my door with his orders. Luckily, I am a night person. Needless to say, I am now in- stituting a time limit as well as a date as to when the orders are due. Sure it's fun to drive half-way across town to pick up a set of orders (And it was fun, Jenise), but I think that once I've set a date, and told people that late orders wouldn't be ac- cepted, that I should stick by it. What do you think? As it was, I recieved two (2) sets of orders via Federal Express - at $8.75 a pop. Due means: in my possession. This turn I turned down two sets of orders because they were late. One of them was from someone who broke into my apartment to turn them in. Very bad. My roommate has a gun... Starting on Turn 4, turn costs will increase to $3.50 (US) per turn. People who pay for turns in advance will recieve the same $2.50 rate, up until turn 4; that means that if you send me money with your third turn's orders, you will get those credits at the $2.50 rate. The opposite is true, that is if you send me lots of money on turn 4, that will be at the $3.50 rate. Understand? Make sure you actually say who you wish to trade with. "Everyone" is not a country.. Everyone is ok in Maintaining trade partners, though. Actually, you don't even have to write anything there, though if you want to cut trade with someone, here would be a good place to say so - for my benefit. Make sure you fill in all or most the important sections of the stat sheet. If you leave Saved NFP/Gold blank, I will not save any for you. Thanks to most of you who followed my examples for writing your orders. Much better. Pizza is a good bribe, along with good halucenogenics... Incidentally, the schedule for turn 4 is: Orders due on July 21 Right before my trip to SEATTLE!!! Results out on Aug. 2 There MAY be a new Lords campaign starting up - using current LIV rules. Stay tuned. If you are dropping out of the game please let me know ahead of time, thus saving me the extra burden of lost direction for your country for the few turns that it takes to refill the position, among other things. I will be printing a list of player addresses next turn. If you wish NOT to be on this list, let me know in your turn 3 orders. The Income section was left blank this turn due to the fact that too many people complained that they had errors in it. It will be reinstituted next turn with the computerized stat-sheet calculations... An Outpost nation is also one that isn't connected to your main group through a continuous connection of YOUR regions. On turn 4, you will no longer be able to puchase Agro to offset the effects of taxation on the turn you pay the tax penalty. Plan ahead. .COSTS/ Lords of the Earth is a copyright of Thomas Harlan. Then came into being the land of the fire giants in the south called Muspelheim, and in the north the land of everlasting cold, Niefelhiem. Where the heat from Muspelheim met the cold from Niefelheim, water condensed into stones. One of these stones became the giant Ymer and another the cow whose milk fed him. The cow licked the stones, and from one of these the god Bure came into being. Bures son got three sons, Oden Vile and Ve. (Don't ask me about the gaps in history.) These three killed the giant Ymer and drowned most of the other gods in his blood. They made then the earth out of his body. The flesh became dirt, the blood water, the bones mountains, and out of his skull they made the sky. After this they stole some sparks from the fire giants and made the sun, the moon and the stars. Later still they made the great fortress Midgard out of his eyelashes and the clouds of his brain. Some time later they were walking on a beach when they found two trees. Out of these the two first humans Ask and Embla were created. The humans were given the lands around Midgard to live in. The gods built themselves a great fortress, Asgard around the trunk of the world tree. This is the place where warriors that died in battle came, carried by Oden's winged women warriors, the Valkyrs. Here they constantly battled all day to be resurrected at sundown so they could party in the great hall of Tor. - Tommy Lindqvist, Sweden LIV /\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\ AFRICA It's obvious who decided to 'Make Love, Not War' /\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\//\\/\ The Empire of Ghana (3+0+0 C) Machi, Lord of Kumbi-Saleh Trading Partners: Mali Diplomacy: Tusyam(nt) Boure(a) Kru(t) Temne(t) Takrur(t) Awlil(nt) Machi sold a little of his extra water-buffalo herdes to the local tradesmen. Onwuma was appointed as heir to the throne of Ghana. Rumors of Machi's infertility run rampant, while he stumbles over the hills of western Africa... Due to the Empires great expansions Machi declared a holiday and let all the national forces go home. Another effect was that Kru dropped to Non-Paying Tributary. The Kingdom of Mali (2+0+0 W) Ogbuefi the Wild One, Keeper of the Dark Secret Trading Partners: Ghana Diplomacy: Ife(f) Senufo(AW) Ogbuefi nearly created many hostilities among the Yorubans and the Benin, if it weren't for his charming ways with the daughters of the local chieftans... Buefi enraged the Senufo to the point of war. He lost 35% in the initial rush, retreating due to the fact that his destiny lay in other lands... After a strenous battle, and a wound or two, Buefi finally creamed the pitiful defences, then he bit the dust in Gurma. Dogamba dropped to Non-Paying Tributary for lack of communications through the deep dark jungles. The Empire of Timbuktu (2+0+0 C) Ikemefuna, Master of the Trade Caravans Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: Zerma(f) Sokoto(f) Ikemefuna disbanded over 70% of his forces in efforts to salvage his countries economy. After the smashing success in Hausa, the Liutenant was adopted into the Royal family. He travelled to the Sudan to propose a few things. The Tribal Confederations of Kanem and Bornu (1+0+0 C) Maghkwi the Boat Master and Exaulted Leader of the Kanem-Bornu Confederation Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: None good... Maghwi said "Good-bye" to his friends from Timbuktu and headed south to Nupe, where his good looks and manly charms just weren't good enough. After two and a half years Maghwi said "Enough of this BS" and attacked the Nupeans. His 6,000 warriors were trounced bye the superior forces of the Nupean force. Maghwi didn't even get a wife. Chief Vaal'Kano rampaged into Kwararafa, where all his horses died of some mysterious disease. He was routed almost immediately and rushed back to Kano to lick his deflated ego. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ EUROPE Where the men are Men and the rest, well... +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ The Goidhelic Kingdom of Connachta (0+0+0 W) Erin Goe Braghe, Lorde of Magryn Keepe, Keeper of the Emeralde Realmes Trading Partners: Sussex Diplomacy: Lienster(f) Erin Braghe, a twin cousin of Erin Goe was appointed first in line for succession. 5,000 troops disbanded after all the money ran dry. Over 3,000 men joined General Shileigh to pay their troop support in the raids on Flanders, Poitou, and Andalusia, which they found had already been raided... The Pope granted Erin large amounts of monks to aid govern his mighty kingdom. This freed up Lieutenant Cleftain. Cleftain took plenty of supplies and cold-weather gear (supposedly) North. He was last seen off the coast of Iceland, as he hailed farewell to it's denizens... Erin's hachet men gained expertise with his training excersises... Erin claimed Madiera and Gibraltar for greater Ireland, only to find the later upsurped by Aleppo... The Norman Kingdom of Sussex (0+0+0 C) Arthur II Trading Partners: Ireland {cute, what are they trading? haha} Diplomacy: Brittany(t) Maine(H) Anjou(t) Anglia(t) Arthur was captured in Westphalia by Loius and his raiders. Lot McCloud of the Clan McCloud, High King of the Lowland Scots picked up some ships from Arthur and pacified both Flanders and Ile de France. The French treasury was found along with most other valuables, like food and gold. Loius is pissed, and if he doesn't get some money soon, he's gonna be a has-been. Percival was appointed Heir to the throne, and none too soon. He arrived in Gascony late in 1109, thus not able to deliver his proposals of marraige to the local noble. Madiera was ceeded to Ireland and Percival requested government support from the Pope. Percival, feeling the strain of government upon his shoulders, saw Northumbria drop to Non-Paying Tributary. Luckily, Lot was close to Percival, being only about 550Km away... The Kingdom of Sweden (2+0+0 W) The Great Jarl, Tommy Bloodaxe Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: Uppsala(f) Jarl married in Uppsala and spent the next 4 years producing children. A son in 1107, a daughter in 1108 who died at birth, and 3 girls (Triplets) in 1109, all of whom lived, including his wife. The Kingdom of Ile de France (0+0+0 C) Louis I Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: None Some public works were erected in Ile de France. Sorj, the rebel Mercenary, was wounded by a French Assassin. Later in 1108 he helped the English invade, free of charge. Louis attempted to garner a loan from the Almoravids, but the gold was not trans- ported from Andalusia, so they were forced with the dilema of troop support costs. 5,500 Cavalry attempted raids on Friesland, Westphalia, and Saxony, the later a part of the Holy Roman Empire. Westphalia was the only territory that had too few troop to defend against the raids. Another useful item was found in Westphalia, noting the events occurring in the homeland. Taking more than four years to lead his troops across Northern Europe, Louis just made it into Lorraine in the winter of 1109. 11,000 much needed infantry based in Ile de France disbanded. It's rumored that Louis is desparate for money... The Duchy of Aquitane (0.6+0+0 C) Duke Roland Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: Lanquedoc(a) Auvergne(nt) Upon hearing of the large movement of troops through Lanquedoc, Duke Roland quickly gained the succor of new allies. He followed the Papal forces into his homeland, where he found them engaged in a passive seige; he immediately attacked them. With the alliance of Lanquedoc, the Papal forces were essentially cut off from their homelands and supply. The Pope's allies and generals went into Aquitaine with over 20,000 men and horse; they were finally routed in 1108 back to the new port city of Marsailles (2p) in Provence with less than 7,000. The city of Toulouse, besides being saved, found a supply in Lanquedoc for the "won- derful nector of the Lords". The Spanish Pooh Corner (2+0+0 C) Winnie the Pooh, Beloved of Christopher Robin Trading Partners: Seljuks Diplomacy: Zirid(nt) Morroco(nt) Algeria(nt) Granada(t) Valencia(f) Winnie was captured in Murcia when his forces attacked for tribute. Tigger, Lord of TTFN and Royal heir took command, but was soon routed. Stuck in the Honey Pot - oh bother. The Holy Roman Empire of Mnchen (1+0+0 C) Henry IV, Monarch of the Great Realm Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: Saxony(f) Franconia(a) Thuringia(a) Swabia(a) Munich (1c) was built in Bavaria among the new public works prodjects. Meissen dropped to nt (from Poland) via Max of Munich, Royal Heir to the HRE throne. Max of Munich married Marion of Saxony with a healthy dowery and the hopes for the future sent from Urban II in Rome. The Republic of Venice (3+0+0 C) Vitale Michiel I, Doge of Venice Trading Partners: RCC Diplomacy: No effect. Spalato (1p) was built in Bosnia. Adalbert of Bergamo took 9,000 men and horse up into the Swiss Alps, among Switzerland and Tyrol. Perhaps that is why he had so little time (puff puff puff phew). RCC - The Papal States (3.6+0+0 C) Urban II, Pope of the Roman Church Trading Partners: Naples(1C), Venice, Sicily Diplomacy: Romagna(t) Capitania(t) Romagna sold Agro to Urban, though many other areas declined. The Papal missionary skills increased through their diplomatic ventures in Tunisia. Venci Tamorlane was appointed "apostolic legate" with full powers to convert his homeland to Roman Catholocism. BL was granted to Ireland and Sicily. The Sicilian Principality (2.3+0+0 C) Venci Tamorlane Trading Partners: RCC Diplomacy: Crete(t) Rhodes(nt) Although the Sunni's in Sicily made a small resurgence, Venci converted more to RC. The Kingdom of Poland (1.3+0+0 C) Thomas the Pole Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: None The Poles did nothing, and lost some troops in the process due to lack of funds. Varangian Rus (2+0+0 W) Vladimir Monomakh, Prince of Kiev Trading Partners: Byzantium Diplomacy: Kirivich(H) Ilmen(t) Estonia(H) Litva(t) Lithuania(nt) Some assassins were sent to Ilmen to kill someone. Sviatopolk Iziaslavich died at the age of 55 in Polotsk while converting the area to Eastern Orthodox. His son Vladimir Monomakh took the Winter throne. Mstislav Vladimirich was appointed second in command. The Rus became a Wilderness kingdom due to the fact that most of their regions are heavily forested. Vladimir spent too much time in Smolensk, and as a result Paphlagonia dropped to tributary, but that was AFTER the Byzintines had picked up the 5,000 troops there. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ The Mid-East Where they take care of their own infidel... +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Byzantium, The Roman Empire of the East (4.6+1+0 C) Nicophorus I, Emperor of Constantinople, Protector of the Patriarch Trading Partners: Kiev, Seljuk Diplomacy: Cyprus(t) Pontus(t) Phrygia(nt) Lybia(H) Rhodes(H) Psidia(nt) Isauria sold the Empire grain at a hefty fee. The Empire STILL had to over-tax AND procure a loan from the Jewish Bankers. Theodosius, heir to the throne, died in 1106, just before Bulgaria was to make their discision on alliance - so they didn't. Thoe Ducas, the Pamphyla ally could not understand his orders, so he didn't do any- thing. The Empire's intelligence networks lost effectiveness for unknown reasons... The Seljuk Sultanate of Rum (3+0+0 C) King Alp Arslan, Seljuk Sultan of Rum Trading Partners: Abbasid, Byzantium Diplomacy: Syria(t) Edessa(t) Cilicia(t) In 1108 Alp heard that Hasheshin emmisaries were conducting diplomacy in Cappadocia, so marched north to Carhae where he attempted to take Carhae troops, but they held alegiance to Sheik Yasir and would not move without his leadership. Alp ended up in Edessa late in 1109 and Cappadocia was tributary to Alamut by then... The Emir Ali Mustafa landed at Crete after passing and avoiding some Sicilians in the Eastern Med. Crete had already stated their loyalties, and Ali Mustafa could do little with the Eastern Orthodoxy. At the end of 1109, Ali landed at Gibralter and Let it be known that the enclave of Gibralter is the sovereign territory of the Seljuk Sultinate of Rum. The outpost Gibralter is just too far to allow trade with the homeland, though it did increase the Seljuk trade efficiency. A loan was taken out to bolster the Sultinate's forces. The Hostile religions of Edessa and Syria would only allow tribute status and the risk of unrest is higher. Let it be known that the Seljuk Sultinate of Rum joins with the Abbasid Caliphate of Baghdad in declaring that infidel attack upon an Islamic nation shall be viewed as an attack upon ourselves. As we will be compelled to take immediately any and all steps, both militarily and otherwise which we deem necessary and appropriate toward safe-guarding the legitimate rights and interests of our brother Islamic nations. The Fatamid Caliphate of Egypt (1+0+0 C) al-Musta'li, Imam of the Egyptions Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: (in flux: see below) al-Musta'li granted Damascus to King Arslan. The Syrians found that amusing. Hashsudi was vastly outnumbered in the Holy Land of Levant. They were within his sphere of infuence, but he still attacked them. Muhammid, in Medina was executed. 50,000 sword-weilding vengeful Moslems swarmed out of Arabia and destoyed all traces of the Heretical Fatamid Dynasty. al-Musta'li was tracked down and murdered in Ghat. Thus ends the Fatamid Caliphate. The Asiri Caliphate of Mecca (2+0+0 C) Omar al-Din ibn Asir, Protector of the Holy Cities, Mighty Destroyer of Heretics Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: Petra(f) Omar declares himself the only truely deserving Moslem Monarch. Due to rampant profane desecration, Omar was forced to take upon himself the mantle of Caliph. The Asiri hold Egypt passive and Medina as the homeland. The Coptic Kingdom of thiopia (1+0+0 C) Shen'ra Fasi, Monarch of the Fungi Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: None Shen'ra Fasi's heir died in 1107. The Abbasid Caliphate of Baghdad (5+0+0 C) Billah al Mustazhir, Light of Heaven, Leader of the Faithful, Most Beloved of Allah Trading Partners: Seljuks Diplomacy: Kuwait(t) Circis(t) The Abbasid bought food from Persia, Circis, and Mosul, thus offsetting his famines. Billah al-Mustazhir died in 1106 doing diplomacy in Medina. Rajiu ibn Billah, rightful heir became Caliph of Baghdad. Mosul revolted. Since Rajiu was Billah's only son, that was about the extent of the transition. Rajiu took 18,000 troops into Kuwait where they immediately decided to pay tribute. The Farsi were not as intelligent, and soon they were descimated. Same with Carmania. The Hasheshin of Alamut (2+0+0 C) Ali Marset Danneson, Glorious Caliph of Alamut Trading Partners: None Available Diplomacy: Cappadocia(t) Gurgan(H) Persia(t) Armenia(AW) Galatia(t) The religious hostilities in Persia limited that land to tributary status. Ali Vlad Taltos lost his escort in Armenia. Georgia was slightly converted. Both Galatia and Cappadocia questioned the strength of the Hasheshin and revolted while Sali was in Persia. Alamut became a Cultivated state. The Emirate of Isfahan (2+0+0 C) Sali al-Sala Ibn Muhamad, Emir of Merv Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: None The Isfahan did nothing. The Uzbeki (3+0+0 C) Shah Ali Khan Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: None The Uzbekie did nothing. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ The Indian Ocean Basin The Hindus practicing un-Hindu ways... +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ The Empire of Kuanaj (2.2+0+0 C) Jahilala Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: Uttar Pradesh(f) The Sakas and the Kamarupans raided Samatata and Pavaka. The Avanti raided Nasik and then Warangal in 1109. The Chalakuya Kingdom (1+0+0 C) Tailappa Nandivarman, Left Hands of Vishnu Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: Nadavaria(f) Kosala(a) Public works were built in Pandya. Silvravrana marched into Malabar and died in combat in 1106. Maduri revolted. The Kingdom of Paghan (1+0+0 C) Winimama, Maharaja of the Paghan Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: Pegu(t) Thaton(f) Burma(f) Prince Wonodada died in 1109. The Hidden Kingdom of Khemer (2+0+0 C) Jayavarman VIII, the son of Bodhisattva Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: Phan Rang(a) Mallaca(t) Jayavarman stayed on in Phan Rang and married Princess Limai Tuat, rather than the Annam heir, who was captured by the Bodhisattva's gaurd. The Island Kingdom of Java (1+0+0 C) Plamarasayan XIV Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: Sumatra(t) A castle was built upon Singapore, thus ensuring Java's claim to that island. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ ASIA +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ The Kingdom of Annam (2+0+0 C) Twin-Wa, Key of the Lanna Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: Canton(H) Fukien(AW) Kiangsi(AW) Nanchung(AW) Chienchung(AW) The Annam overtaxed to unheard-of ranges. Twin-Wa attempted to slave raid Chekiang, but was repulsed by the 3,000 foot soldiers defending the area. So he sailed south to Khemer were he slave raided that undefended region. He was last seen in the Siam Wan. The Kwangtung ally got his army taken away from him in Fukien. The Empire of Tsung China (11+0+0 C) Tsu-na Tsung, Celestial God-King of the Middle Kingdom Trading Partners: Changchou, Cathay (note separate ITV's) Diplomacy: Hsianchou(nt) Kweichou(H) Chienchung(nt) Kansu(t) Lungyu(N) Chingchi(nt) Tsu-ni had a girl who died at birth in 1105. Fukien already claimed it's loyalties to the Changchou, so the Tsung envoy could do little in 1109. Tsu-ni died in 1109. His son Tsu-na Tsung rose to the level of the Gods. Kansu, Chienchung, and Chiennan all revolted when the paperwork just became too much. Severe food riots are expected in the coming years... The Brotherhood of Red Lanterns were caught running crime operations in Tungtao by the municipal authorities. They immediately confessed to being partisans of the Tsung cause. Principality of Changchou (3+0+0 C) Celestial Prince Sun Hou-Tsu, King of Chekiang Trading Partners: Tsung(6C) Diplomacy: Fukien(nt) Nanchung(a) Piechou(t) Shangtung(f) The Yellow-Turbans, a tendril of the Y Chui rescued the Radiant Prince, Tatsu Wei, from the prisons of Junchou. They were paid an exorbitant sum by the Celestial Prince, thus justifying the loan Sun Hou-Tsu took out. Trickster King Monkey smiled on the Celestial Prince. Cathay China - The Northern Sung (10+0+0 C) Chen Qxuido, God-King of the Yellow Valley Trading Partners: Tsung(5C) Diplomacy: Hsuing-Nu(H) Tumet(H) Ningsia(nt) Anshan(f) Hotung(N) Tungwhang(AW) Turfan(H) Lord Li Ghen died in 1105 while doing diplomacy in Tuchi. He was replaced in the homeland. The Protectorate of Silla (0+0+0 C) Twi Sintare, Lord of the Silla Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: Liao-Tung(a) Pei Chilhi(H) Nanchilhi(a) Koguryo(f) Mutsu(nt) Wandering Y Chui scholars advised the Lord of Silla to quickly sieze the Caosen and ally with the Echigo Han in Nipon to offset the Fujiwara. Twi Sintare followed this sage advice and his General Hop Nisso dined with the Fujiwara at Oda in 1109. The nation nearly toppled with Twi Sintare so far away in Nanchilhi... The Nihon Islands (2+0+0 C) Fujiwara Akido Ti-Sendo, Shogun and Emperor of Nihon, Amaterasu Incarnate Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: Mori(t) The Nihon attempted to pay support costs with his national forces... Wiser heads suggested that he disband some less needed troops rather than wipe out his Intel and Government. After his TOTAL, humiliating defeat, Arimari committed seppuku to main- tain clan honor. The Goroda clan found another more deserving General. The Echigo Han was murdered by the Fujiwara and the populace of Echigo has been infiltrated... The Kara Nomads (1+0+0 S) Oktatra the Wild, Master of the High Steppe Trading Partners: None Diplomacy: None Oktatra did little wandering. Y Chui The various organizations of the Y Chui may be able to help YOU! Let them know by giving them gold and some advance warning (tell them the turn before you want to use their services) and they may help you. If they decide not to help you, they may or may not return your money. The Y Chui are able to collect gold from nearly everywhere in Asia...
