Russian Civil War - October 1918 From: gil@gatech.edu (Gil Neiger) Date: Wed, 10 May 1989 19:03:32 +0000 October 1918 RED DEFENDERS CRUSH INVADERS AT PETROGRAD AND KURSK WHITE PLAGUE DEVASTATES PETROGRAD, GREEN HITS SIBERIA THE WAR IS OVER BUT THE FIGHTING CONTINUES AS WHITE RUSSIA GOES WHITE The summer saw incursions by White forces into Greater Russia across a wide front in the south and even to the gates of Petrograd. Red leaders rallied their forces this fall to defend the great cities, notably Petrograd and Kursk. Lenin himself raised the sailors of Petrograd to fight off and crush Rodzyanko's troops outside the city. Rodzyanko himself was killed in the battle, and his "comrade," Yudenich, is rethinking his strategies in Livonia. Budyenny led a large force out of Kursk to route Kutepov's forces from Sevastopol. Kutepov also fell, and his last words were said to be "Damn May-Maevsky and the bistros of Kharkov!" (May-Maevsky was said to have been drunk the night he was assassinated in Kharkov, leaving his Volunteer Army --- raised to support Kutepov at Kursk --- paralyzed in that city). The Reds have also been successful in less direct attacks. Starting in Orel, Stalin led a group of undercover agents behind German lines in Chrernigov. Convinced of the folly of the German imperial policy (see below), these troops have deserted and are now marching on Berlin. But the Reds have not been entirely successful. Attempts to subvert British troops and Baku and Americans in Archangel have failed. More importantly, the White incursion at Petrograd took a heavy but indirect toll on Lenin's defenders. The "White Plague" (also known as Baltic bronchitis) swept through the city, killing the sailors, leaving Lenin with only a small entourage at his headquarters. The "Green Plague" of Siberia, which hit Red and White forces alike in Chita last summer, has been reported in Irkutsk now, wiping out the Tatar forces that had been raised there for the independence of Siberia. Outside of Russia, the biggest news was the end of World War I. An Allied spearhead in Belgium pierced the German lines there and crossed the Rhine. After troops from the Eastern Legion marched on Berlin (see above), Kaiser Wilhelm abdicated, and the provisional German government sued for peace. As a result, all German forces have evacuated all provinces of the old Russian Empire. As part of the armistice and general peacemaking, Japanese forces, occupying areas around Vladivostok, have also withdrawn to the home islands and to Chosen (occupied Korea). The withdrawal of the Germans from White Russia heartened the Byelorussians, who have long desired their independence from Russian rule. Convinced that the Reds, with the Germans now gone, would attempt to reoccupy the old western provinces, the Byelorussians have declared an alliance with Denikin and his White forces. These troops and Yudenich's in Livonia are all that stands between the Red "menace" and the chaos that is now Central Europe. Finally, the end of the war has had an impact on the Czech Legion in Siberia. These troops had been promised repatriation to Austria-Hungary. Agents of Vatzetis informed the Czech troops, currently occupying the rail line in Ekaterinburg, of the formation of the Czechoslovak republic. In light of promises that the Czar would soon be executed, and the Whites routed, the Czechs have agreed to be repatriated via Moscow and have disbanded. Czech forces in Chelyabinsk and Omsk, unaware of the war's end, remain at their stations, hoping that one day the Trans-Siberian railroad will take them to Vladivostok and a boat from Trieste. GAME STATUS: Note the following correction to last turn's announcements: the Red combat unit from Vladimir, currently stacked with Frunze, has strength 4, not 3. Mike Collier continues to play the position of Player A, but anyone interested in taking of that position should contact me (Gil Neiger - gil@gatech.edu). COMBAT: Attacks are described using the following format: WASH: G - RL2 Breznev (RU6 MOSC), RL1 Sakharov in BALT against BU3 999/MX (N) 3:1 - 1 - DE - BU3 999/MX means that there is an attack in Washington. Player G attacks with the indicated stack from Baltimore (the location of the attacker is listed only for subversive attacks) against the indicated Mexican unit. The defender's owner is listed in parentheses (A-F, and N for neutral). The odds are 3:1, and the die roll was a 1, resulting in "Defender Eliminated." BU3 999/MX is lost. These should include: 1. Trades. Only Assassin and Politburo Markers may be traded. 2. Change of the Central Committee. Players with Politburo Markers may choose to change the composition of the Central Committee. No orders are necessary to retain the current composition of the Central Committee. 3. Movement & Assassination. Players can specify the movement of their leader and attached combat and imperial units. Be sure to specify which units are attached to which leaders, and what units constitute the stacks, and in what order. Assassination orders will be carried out during the movement phase as indicated in the rules. 4. Purges. Players on the Central Committee may submit purge orders. See rules Section 11.0 (including notes in my house rules). Players can be as specific as they like regarding the selection and division of spoils. If no selection of spoils is provided, then I will choose spoils randomly (i.e., tell me what leader you want if you get one, or else I'll give you one randomly). Up
