And the Lying, scheming slime-covered perfidious, infidel Turkish dog- suckled snakes should apologize. Die Italian pigs! ------------------- The Daily Ottoman ------------------- 'It was one of the most difficult decisions of my life.' That is what Grand Emperor Henry "Hank" Arrah had to say this week about his decision to use a 23-lb fish (caught while sailing with the Third fleet currently stationed in Greece) a weapon in the bombardment of the French position in the Ionian. 'Quite simply, we ran out of shells after a few hours and had to cast our nets out into the sea to get something to throw at the enemy,' said Admiral R. Meeneyuh, Commander of the flagship "Flounder." Emperor Arrah has officially declared a national day of mourning and has promised to double up on supplies of shells and fishnets to all fleets stationed abroad. In other news, the sailors of the 2nd fleet in the Aegean have once again vowed revenge on the French naval unit stationed in the Ionian sea. "Ooooo, but they're snotty!" said one sailor amidst murmurs of approval from his shipmates. GERMANY AND ENGLAND ON THE MOVE! FRANCE MAKES NO HEADWAY! Austria, beset by enemies from Italy and Turkey, loses gains made during 1901. The Italian attacks against her fail, due to some wonderful defense by Austrian armies, but to no avail. One of her units must disband due to lack of supplies. That will leave here in a precarious position, her centersu available to the Italians, or perhaps the Germans, as Turkey and Russia slug it out. Russia has problems of her own. Although she captured Bulgaria with Austrian help, she was blasted out of Sweden by an alliance of Germany and England. And to add insult to injury, and English Fleet has entered the harbor at St. Petersburg, without a shot being fired. The English have also made a move that threatens the French, who failed in their attempt to capture Belgium. An English Fleet has occupied the Channel, while the French Fleet, caught completely by surprise, moves into Spain. It appears to this reporter, that Russia and Turkey are mortal enemies, not caring about what happens to them from others. Germany has abruptly turned on Russia, causing a great loss to the Tsar. ============================================================================== _The European Gazette_ Vienna, Austria (AP (Austrian Press)): In a statement from the Kaiser of Austria, the Press Secretary reported on the Kaiser's determination to assist the Russian Tsar in an effort to secure the Balkan peninsula. When asked about the presence of Italian troops occupying the port of Trieste, the Press Secretary stated that measures were being taken to re-secure the port. The Press Secretary refused to comment when asked about the reasons for not using the Army stationed in Serbia to assist in this maneuver. ITALY RAISES A FLEET IN THE MEDITERRANEAN! GERMANY RAISES AN ARMY IN BERLIN! The situation for Austria looks grim. She has lost her only seaport, and is between the jaws of Turkey and Italy, and a German Army has made an appearance. Since it looks as if there is an Anglo-German alliance (witness the cooperation in Sweden), France may be the next target. Russian forces were routed out of Sweden, and a Russian seaport is occupied by enemy forces, with little hope of being recaptured. The lone French fleet is in Spain, not in good position to defend against England. Neither Russia nor Turkey gained a build, so no advantage in their long running dispute was gained. ============================================================================== Spring 1903 moves are due Sunday, May 7, at 10PM EDT. ENGLAND AND GERMANY MOVE ON FRANCE! TURKISH BLUNDER ALLOWS RUSSIANS INTO ANKARA! England and Germany are moving on France! An English Fleet attempted to sail into the Mid-Atlantic, met by a French Fleet. The English, by moving a Fleet into the North Atlantic, are set to take the Mid-Atlantic by force. The Germans, meanwhile, are knocking at the back door - Marsailles. France may be in serious trouble, as it appears that Italy is not interfering with the German plans, and Russia is in no position to. Austria has managed to hang on, mostly due to the Russian, Turkish dual. It appears, though, that Russia and Turkey may beat on each other just long enough to make sure that both of them are eliminated. Italy is preparing for a massive attack on Austria. A Russian Fleet has made landfall in Ankara! This fleet slipped in behind the moving Turkish fleet, which defeated the Russians in Armenia. All players submitted orders on time but the GM got a little busy and would have been an hour and a half late, I have to run so I couldn't wait any longer. GM comments: I am interested in increasing our amount of players. IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME PLACE CLASSIFIED ADS IN THEIR UNIVERSITY NEWSPAPER, LET ME KNOW. Also remember that I do run postal games, this is especially important if you may lose Usenet access and don't want to switch over to Portal access. I am also now using a mailing list to directly mail this zine to all players, let me know if you are not getting it directly! I have lost one of my archivers, so am looking for a few more. Let me know if you are interested. I will send you issues 1 - 50 via disk or modem if you become an archiver. (I support IBM, Macintosh, and Apple II disk format.) I would like some old copies of the rulebook. I only have the '82 edition. If anyone can send me xeroxes of old copies, I would be much obliged. Here's a neat trick that I learned to get the hottest Nintento cartridges: Go to the appliance section at K-mart! Nintento gives each store a fixed amount of cartridges, so going to K-mart instead of a toy store is a good idea. K-mart had a whole pile of Legend of Zelda II cartridges, the hottest cartridge there is! Taken from Diplomacy World #52: DIXIECON II: THE TRADITION CONTINUES By David Hood Memorial Day weekend 1988 again saw an influx of Diplomacy players into Chapel Hill. The University of North Carolian, under the auspices of the Carolian Amateur Diplomats, hosted DIXIECON II, a two-day tournament for Diplomacy and variant gaming. Once again, I had the pleasure of hosting the event and running the tournament. The fun began on the Friday night before the Con, when we had unofficial gaming for early arrivals at the home of CAD secretary Mike Lowrey. There was a lively Titan game, involving Wisconsin's James Wall and Marc Peters, CAD member Chris Kremer, and CAD- Charlotte member Dan Sellers. In the other room, a deadly stab-fest was going on in the form of a Diplomacy game. Participants included well-known PBM players John Crosby, and Mike Gonsalves, as well as the 1987 DIXIECON champ Morgan Gurley. The game ended in an Italian- German two-way, between Gonsalves and CAD member Mike Pinkerton. Early the next morning, more Dipsters began to arrive, eventually filling two Diplomacy games by 1100. The first of these was concluded as a four-way draw, as a strong Austrian-Turkish alliance was thrwarted by English-French cooperation. The members of the draw were Kremer, CAD members Bob O'Dear and Mark Stegeman, and CAD- Charlotte member Chris Kiker. Game B had a quite different endgame, as Russia attempted to force a win at the expense of an English- French alliance. Unfortunately, for DW Variants Editor Dave McCrumb, his Russia was stopped at 13 centers by Gurley's France and Wall's England. He was forced to give in to an English-French two-way draw. Game C started roughly two hours after A and B, and featured a three- way draw between Austria, England, and Russia. PBMer Stan Plummer was able to stymie the advance of Austria and Russia, played by Sellers and Virginia FTFer Rob McCarter. The second game of Round Two, Game D, was played at the same time the Gunboat tournament was raging. It featured a strong French-German alliance facing a weak and divided east with no strong alliance bonds. Wall and Peters collected their two-way, as Gonsalves' attempts as Turkey to create a "united front" failed to win the support of his neighbors. The Gunboat Tournament this year featured the SkinnyDip vairant instead of the normal Diplomacy board. Two full games were played under the expert gamemastering of David McCrumb. The eventual winner was Realeigh, NC newcomer Andrew Chilton. All decided that the game would probably make a good one with negotiations, but as a gunboat variant it was rather tedious. My thanks to McCrumb for his excellently drawn SkinnyDip boards and for running the mini- tournament. Sunday morning at 0930 marked the beginning of Round Three in the Diplomacy Tournament. Twenty-one players stood ready to do battle, as three boards filled up. Game E proved to be a decisive one for Best Country awards: England and France swept to a two-way and the Best Country Awards for their respective nations. Gonsalves and McCrumb were able to prevent an eastern push to stalemate them, much to the chagrin of Kiker's Austria and Pinkerton's Turkey. Game F decided the fate of the First Place Prize, as Mark Stegeman pulled off the only solo win of the tournament as Russia. Seller's Italy chose to attack France and Germany rather than Russia in mid- game, precipitating a move by myself and Wall's Germany to give Stegeman the wine. Sellers came in second with ten centers. Game G put Gurley in Second Place overall as his Turkey allied with Kremer's Russia to sweep to a two-way. They were helped in this endeavor by McCarter's Germany, over the frantic cries of Lowery's France to "turn and face the RT!" My congratulations to all those who placed at this year's tournament. In addition to our exciting and competitive Diplomacy and SkinnyDip tournaments, there were also several games of Titan played, as well as Chess and Axis and Allies. In general, things went well this year -- no police came to evict us at midnight, like they did last year. DIXIECON III will be held once again next year on Memorial Day weekend 1989. Be there! Taken from Excelsior #26: THE TOP TEN WAYS TO GET KICKED OUT OF A DIPLOMACY TOURNAMENT 1. After making a successful guess in a crucial situation, tell your enemies confidentally that the tournament GM revealed their orders to you before the vital move. 2. Submit orders for games you aren't in. 3. At a tournament where nobody knows you, switch nametags with a confederate after the first round. 4. Arrive in a Rambo outfit complete with live ammunition and firearms. 5. Plan future strategies (at least five game years ahead) by moving the pieces around at the table. 6. React to the first stab by throwing the board and pieces on the floor. 7. Read the orders as they are submitted, then claim "I was just looking for a blank piece of paper." 8. Kibitz another game, and secretly reveal everyone's gameplan. 9. Enter the tournament twice, once under a pseudonym. 10. Spend the first negotiating period allying with various players at different tables. I am enjoying moderating this zine, keep that mail coming! Eric Klien Up
