Russian Civil War - August 1918 From: gil@gatech.edu (Gil Neiger) Date: Tue, 02 May 1989 14:28:46 +0000 August 1918 REDS PURGE AND WHITES ASSASSINATE! WHITES FORCES DRIVE INTO RUSSIA (AND LAKE PSKOV)! KOLCHAK KNOCKS ON CZAR'S DOOR, BUT NICK'S NOT HOME! As it has become clear now that Civil War is unavoidable, forces on both sides of the conflict have consolidated the troops under their commands. White forces have driven into southern Russia: Kutepov's forces from Sevastopol are faced off against Budyenny outside Kursk and Denikin and Krasnov have a huge force besieging Voroshilov and Stalin in Orel. Miller's troops in Ryazan (force marched from Archangel) and Wrangel's in Penza are poised to march on Moscow by winter. (However, it is not clear how reliable Wrangel is, owing to his close ties with Lenin.) For the most part, Red forces have withdrawn from the western provinces and have regrouped to face the attack from the south. Lenin and Trotsky have taken change of the defense of Petrograd and Moscow, respectively. Antonov and Zinoviev have led a large force into Orenburg, hoping to hit the rear of the White forces in south Russia. Bela Kun and his Hungarians, however, are still operating in White Russia, and have joined forces with Muraviev. Admiral Kolchak, liberally spending the Imperial treasury, has assembled a large force in western Siberia, and marched into Ekaterinburg, expecting to liberate Czar Nicholas. Unfortunately, the imperial family was smuggled out at the last minute, and is now under the control of Vatzetis somewhere in the high mountains of Perm. Bonch-Bruevich has assembled a large force near the Finnish border; his loyal troops, some from as far as Vladimir, are determined to drive the Anglo-Saxon invaders from the shores of Mother Russia - British and American troops on the docks of Archangel seem blissfully unaware of the trouble that may await them. The wet summer weather has helped the spread of disease everywhere. Typhus in Georgia has all but halted battles going on outside Tiflis. Cholera in Chita has put an end Kikvidze's pursuit of Dieterichs across the plains of Siberia. And, perhaps most importantly, a smallpox outbreak in Moscow caught Trotsky by surprise, decimating his forces. Although consolidation best characterizes this summer's activities, there has been dissension within the ranks on both sides. Romanovksy, a renegade White general, arrived by rail in Kharkov in late July and at midnight two of his henchmen (known only as Ivan C. and Maxim P.) broke into May-Maevsky's quarters and left a dagger in his chest. The Cossacks of Kharkov stand leaderless, and it is thought that Romanovsky may take yet more advantage of the situation. On the Red side, the newly formed Central Committee, led by Lenin and Bela Kun (!), has spoken harshly against Trotsky and his lazy defense of Moscow. Sytin has declared allegiance to Lenin, fearing the wrath of the Committee. GAME STATUS: Chris Christensen has taken over position E. Mike Collier is still playing position A, but I am still looking for someone to take over that position. May-Maevsky was assassinated in Kharkov, and his combat unit (WU6 KHAR) is left leaderless there. PURGES: Players A and E have formed a Central Committee with 10 votes from the Politburo. Their first act was to purge Player E, with 26 purge points (16 leader points plus 10 PM's). The die roll was 8, yielding one point of spoils. These should include: 1. Trades. Only Assassin and Politburo Markers may be traded. 2. Election of the Central Committee. Players with Politburo Markers may choose to change the composition of the Central Committee. 3. Attacks. Players should specify which of their stacks are attacking which opposing stacks in the same province. Red units may alternatively attack Blue units (subversively) in an adjacent province. Attackers anticipating the possibility of an exchange should specify which units are to be lost in that event. Note that no assassinations or purges can take place. Up
