Russian Civil War - June 1919 From: gil@gatech.edu (Gil Neiger) Date: Fri, 16 Jun 1989 13:08:56 +0000 June 1919 WHITE TROOPS MARCH INTO CENTRAL RUSSIA TROTSKY EVACUATES MOSCOW AND ESCAPES TO FINLAND BATTLE FOR THE GOLD BEGINS IN PERM Having regrouped in the Ukraine and the Kuban, White armies led by Denikin, Miller, and Yudenich have poured into central Russia and are threatening Moscow from the east. Denikin, commanding the largest force, is now based in Yaroslavl, northeast of the Moscow. His strength has been lessened, however, by an outbreak of cholera in the area, which has decimate the Don Cossacks under Krasnov. Miller's troops occupy Vladimir, east of Moscow, and the smallest force, under Yudenich, are stationed in Ryazan. Perhaps in response to this threat, Trotsky and his allied commanders (Tukhachevksy, Voroshilov, and others) have evacuated the city, leading four large armies into Finland. It is not clear whether this was done with the hope that ht White armies would respect the neutrality of the newborn Finnish republic, or whether Trotsky seeks to establish a socialist republic in Finalnd and acquire an important ally. (Lenin, seemingly ignoring the White threat, has concentrated his efforts on recruiting for the northern militias, which were severely depleted in last winter's plague.) The execution of the Czar in the Urals is leading to a massive battle for the control of the Imperial treasury. Romanovsky, the renegade White general (and would be movie star), sent his agents to Dutov's Provisional Treasurer's office in Perm. Dutov was assassinated, and a skirmish broke out over control of the treasury between the forces of Kolchak and Vatzetis. In the end, Kolchak won out, taking control of the Treasury and the troops previously loyal to Dutov. But the battle is not over. Kolchak and his allies (it is not clear where Romanovsky fits into this picture) have besieged Vatzetis and others in a few small mountain strongholds and have pledged to avenge the death of the Czar, and rescue Anastasia, the rightful ruler of the Russian Empire. Other Red forces are planning to mop up the remains of foreign interventionists. Bela Kun and Sivers both command forces in Poltava, in the Ukraine, trying to oust the Rumanian and Hungarian invaders around Kherson (rumors abound that these troops are huddled on the steps of Odessa, waiting for their ships to come in). Peterson and others have moved into Vologda, hoping to frighten British troops in Archangel into withdrawal. British troops continue to patrol the newly formed Transcaucasian Republic (with that government's permission), guarding British interests in the Persian Gulf. GAME STATUS: It has been proposed that we move to one week deadlines for all moves. Please vote on this with your Turn 3 combat orders. Missing votes will be considered as positive votes. I will be away for the months of July and August, so the game will be suspended after Turn 3 combat (next turn). I will send all players notices when I return in September. These should include: 1. Trades. Only Assassin and Politburo Markers may be traded. 2. Election of the Central Committee. Players with Politburo Markers may choose to change the composition of the Central Committee. 3. Attacks. Players should specify which of their stacks are attacking which opposing stacks in the same province. Red units may alternatively attack Blue units (subversively) in an adjacent province. Attackers anticipating the possibility of an exchange should specify which units are to be lost in that event. 4. Purges. Players on the Central Committee may submit purge orders. See rules Section 11.0 (including notes in my house rules). Players can be as specific as they like regarding the selection and division of spoils. If no selection of spoils is provided, then I will choose spoils randomly (i.e., tell me what leader you want if you get one, or else I'll give you one randomly). Up
