ITALY DEVESTATED BY ANGLO-GERMAN ATTACKS! AUSTRIA HIT BY GERMANS AND TURKS! FRANCE LOSES PORTUGAL! Sevastapol was taken by Turkish troops, preventing it from lending support to the Ukranian troops. As a results, German tropps marched into Moscow, with the support of English forces. Russia has fallen! Austrian troops were driven from Budapest by a combined Turko-German attack. Trieste is open, and may be occupied by the retreating Austrians. Italy was smashed, losing all of her home supply centers. Should the Austrians retreat to Trieste, Italy will have only 2 units remaining. France lost her first supply center - Portugal. She managed to drive the English from Spain, but in the process, allowed the Germans to move into Picar> and Burgandy. Germany now occupies 11 centers, only 7 short of total victory. England now controls 9, and Turkey 6. Italy and Austria appear to be the next casualties in this war, with France so> to follow. Since there are 8 centers owned by Italy, Austria and France, it is possible for Germany to win outright by capturing the remaining centers. ============================================================================== _The Ankara Daily Turk_ Fall 1905 Edition Things are quiet in the Turkish capital with the foreign threat to the homeland removed. This reporter caught up with Fidel Ottoman down at the Gaseous Camel, the local pub where most of the Turkish politicos hang out. I asked Fidel about his intentions with the recent show of friendship towards Germany. Fidel pointed to a glass of very dark liquid and said, "They sent me a truckload of dark beer. Everyone knows the Germans make the worlds best dark beer. How could I do otherwise than repay such kindness?" ============================================================================== -Steve (gm) Autumn and Winter '03 of D-DAY (BNC number 1989AW) (GM is MaryFW@Cup.portal.com, Starting Tuesday GM will be Pav@cs.duke.edu) Results, and more or less on time at that! "Your help has been invaluable", he is quoted as saying, "now will you please all go home again". ------------------------------------------------------- AUSTRIAN EMPEROR ADMITS TO GAMBLING PROBLEM Vienna (AP) - In a sad and often tearful press conference today, the Austrian Emperor Franz Vick admitted to a stunned crowd of reporters that he had a gambling addiction. "Although I've tried to control it, it just keeps getting out of hand time and time again. It began small - marbles, jacks, dominoes - but the problem has gotten progressively worse, and has reached the final and most terrible stange of all - lotto addiction." The emperor said that he'd sought help at Jimmy the Greek's Gambling Treatment Center, but to no avail. "When I came in, Jimmy said my odds of recovery were very low. I guess he was right." During his most painful stage of addiction, the emperor revealed, he bet the entire Austrian budget on the Italian national lottery. "It took them a while to print out the million or so tickets, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to win the $5 million jackpot - after all, my chances are now about 1 in 10,000..." After Italian shopkeepers refused to sell any more lottery tickets to him, the emperor sent his agents into Russian and Turkish territory in search of more tickets. "I hope they don't mind. I was desperate to buy more lotto tickets, even if my chances of winning the whole game is pretty small.." ******************************************** Pete's Points: Turkey has asked that we skip a week before the next move, as he will be out of town June 15-21. It has also been requested that we institute ten-day moves, to allow for better communication. Please send me your votes on both questions ASAP. Spring '01 of BLITZKRIEG (BNC number not known) (GM is dougi@astro.as.utexas.edu/Doug Ingram) First moves will definitely be due June 18, 1989. I believe that everyone has established connections with everyone else. Let both me and the GM know if you have any troubles establishing e-mail connections. GM comments: I have GM and player openings as usual. And remember to vote in the Runestone Poll! We should let everyone know how big the e-mail hobby is getting! I need GMs for my postal zine, PROTOCOL. Anyone who volunteers gets the zine free! And let me know if you have a preference for GMing Gunboat games or regular Diplomacy games. (I now have 7 people for my first Gunboat game.) And I am willing to provide flyers for hobby stores or pay for any classified ads that people think would help attract people into our hobby. Taken from Excelsior #28: THE TOP TEN RUNESTONE POLL ACHIEVEMENTS THAT *DON'T* GET YOU AN AWARD CERTIFICATE 1. The "Some Like It Hot" Title. Awarded to the zine that gets the most tens AND zeros. 2. The Honourary Five-and-Dime-Store Magnfiying Glass. Given to publishers who use photo-reduction liberally in reproducing the Runestone poll ballot. 3. The Robert Sacks-inspired "Enemy Of The Hobby Health Index #1" Award. Bestowed (by force) upon the voter whose ballot features the lowest average vote. 4. The Leo Durocher "Nice Guys Finish Last" Title. Won by the lowest-ranking zine that nobody saw fit to give a zero to. 5. The "Rod Walker Be Damned" Award. Given to the hobby newcomer whose collection of free samples enables him to vote for the most zines. 6. The Dick Martin Place of Dishonour in TCSR. Given to the person responsible for the most rejected ballots. 7. The "Contrary Motion" Award. Given to any GM who greatly improves his standing in the Zine Poll while plummeting in the GM Poll--or vice versa. 8. The Dick Martin Prize. Given to any publisher who bad-mouths the Poll so much (and/or so often) that it results in a serious drop for his zine. 9. The "Anti-Mainstream" Award. Given to the person who votes for the most zines that do not appear on the ballot. 10. The Dick Martin Award. Given to the person who votes for the highest number of zines he doesn't see. Sweet@horizon.css.gov/Kevin Sweet has sent be a xerox of the 1976 rulebook, here are the differences that I found from the 1982 edition: 1) The 1982 edition says the 1982 edition in a diagonal message in the right hand corner; the 1976 edition has nothing in the right hand corner. 2) In small print under the title Diplomacy in the 1976 edition it says "Copyright 1976 The Avalon Hill Game Co."; in small print unter the title Diplomacy in the 1982 edition it says "Diplomacy is the Avalon Hill game company's trademark for its game of international intrigue". 3) Under the title Diplomacy in the 1976 edition it says in big cursive letters "the exciting game of international intrigue"; under the title of the 1982 edition it says nothing. 4) In the lower right hand corner of the 1976 edition it says no. 8916, in the 1982 edition it says nothing. 5) Under the red box in the 1982 edition it says "Copyright 1976 The Avalon Hill Game Co.", in the 1976 edition it says nothing. 6) On page 11 of the 1976 edition it says "Extra Conference Maps are available - Set of 7 for $1.00 Send check or money order to:", in the 1982 edition it says "Extra Conference Maps are available - See Current Parts List for Prices. Send check or money order to:" Whoops! I bet you wanted to know the rules changes, not the minor format changes. Well, just for the record the previous paragraph did get all of the format changes that I could find. The rules changes were in XII.4-6, rules 4 and 5 were changed and 6 was added in the 1982 edition. And how did Avalon Hill squeeze in this extra rule? They used smaller print for rules 1-6! I guess they didn't computer typeset the original edition of the rulebook. Here's rules 4 and 5 from the 1976 edition: 4. AMBIGUOUS CONVOY ROUTES. If the orders as written permit more than one route by which the convoyed army could proceed from its source to its destination, the order is not void on account of this ambiguity; but if any of the possible routes are destroyed by dislodgement of a fleet, the army many not move. Example 12. ENGLAND: (A Lon-Bel), (F Eng C A Lon-Bel), F Nth C A Lon-Bel; FRANCE: F Bre-Eng, F Iri S F Bre-Eng. The order to F Nth would normally succeed, but since F Eng, which was dislodged on the move, was also ordered to convoy, the convoy is disrupted and A Lon fails to move. If F Eng had not been dislodged, the convoy would have succeeded. 5. A CONVOYED ATTACK DOES NOT PROTECT THE CONVOYING FLEETS. If a convoyed army attacks a fleet which is supporting a fleet which is attacking one of the convoying fleets, that support is not cut. Example 13. FRANCE: (A Spa-Nap), F Lyo C A Spa-Nap, (F Tyr C A Spa- Nap); ITALY: F Ion-Tyr, F Nap S F Ion-Tyr. Without this rule, France could argue that the army cut the support of the fleet in Naples, thus protecting the convoying fleet from dislodgment, while Italy could argue that dislodgement of the fleet disrupted the convoy so that the army could not arrive at Naples to cut the support. Here's rules 4-6 from the 1982 edition: 4. MORE THAN ONE CONVOY ROUTE. If the orders as written permit more than one route by which the convoyed army could proceed from its source to its destination, the order is not void on account of this ambiguity; and the army is not prevented from moving due to dislodgement of fleets, unless all the routes are disrupted. Example 12. ENGLAND: A Lon-Bel, (F Eng C A Lon-Bel), F Nth C A Lon- Bel; FRANCE: F Bre-Eng, F Iri S Bre-Eng. The army had two convoy routes, of which only one was disrupted. 5. A CONVOYED ATTACK DOES NOT CUT CERTAIN SUPPORTS. If a convoyed army attcks a fleet which is supporting an action in a body of water; and that body of water contains a convoying fleet, that support is not cut. 6. BOTH A CONVOY ROUTE AND AN OVERLAND ROUTE. If an army could arrive at its destination either overland or by convoy, one route must be considered and the other disregarded, depending upon intent as shown by the totality of the orders written by the player governing the army. Comments on the rules changes: I believe that neither rule 4 is good, a better rule would be if a player gives his units more than one convoy route then this should be considered illegal and all routes fail. If another player adds a second unnecessary convoy route for an army it should be ignored. And if many players are involved in the convoy and more than one route exists then the convoy should fail unless the player who owns the army specifies which convoy route should be taken. Of the two rules, I like the new one better because the old rule would allow an opponent to add an unnecessary convoy and then cut the convoy. I follow the 1982 rule. I believe that the new rule 5 is better because it removes some paradox situations. I like rule 6 but it is too vague so I have replaced it with a more specific rule in my houserules. And that ends this article. If anyone can send me xeroxes of older editions of the rulebook, I would be most interested. I am enjoying moderating this zine, keep that mail coming! Eric Klien Up
