Russian Civil War - August 1919 From: gil@gatech.edu (Gil Neiger) Date: Fri, 23 Jun 1989 20:34:32 +0000 August 1919 "CZAR" KOLCHAK CRUSHES VATZETIS & ZINOVIEV IN PERM BRITISH WITHDRAW --- IT'S A RUSSIAN WAR NOW LENIN & TROTSKY SUCCESSFULLY WOO NATIONALISTS The summer of 1919 will be remembered as a turning point in the Russian Civil War --- but a point at which it's not clear which way the war is turning. Militarily, the most significant event was the Battle of Perm. Three armies led by Admiral Kolchak had surrounded the large Red army commanded by Vatzetis and Zinoviev in Perm (the White general Romanovsky did not take part in this action). Kolchak, hoping to avenge the execution of the Czar (carried out by Vatzetis) demanded that the Reds surrender and give up the remaining member of the Imperial family, the Countess Anastasia. The Reds refused, and the echoes of the ensuing battle were heard in Petrograd and Moscow. When the dust cleared, the Red armies had been wiped out, and their remnants scattered. Kolchak himself hewed down Vatzetis with a 17th century sabre and rescued the Countess. Rumors are that Kolchak plans to take Anastasia as his bride and claim the Imperial throne. General Denikin and Baron Wrangel have rejected this succession, but Denikin at least has pledged to aid Kolchak against the Reds. As this was happening, the last foreign interventionists were withdrawing from Russia. Bela Kun, himself a Magyar, persuaded the Hungarian troops in the Ukraine to mutiny and join his forces. General Sivers, as Protector General of the Transcaucasian Republic, convinced the Rumanian forces there to withdraw in exchange for a guarantee of Rumania's borders. The last remaining western European forces in Russia were the British. Their northern army sailed in July for Scapa Flow, and their troops in Transcaucasia have withdrawn to Persia, satisfied by the establishment of that republic as a buffer state. Trotsky's Finnish Ruse has paid off for the Red cause. During the spring, Trotsky ordered four huge armies into Finland, at the expense of leaving Moscow undefended. The Finnish Republic was cowed by this action and declared its continuing neutrality in the Russian conflict. But some of the other former Imperial subject nationalities now see the advantage of allying themselves with the Reds. The infant state of Poland, with a large army of its own, has pledged support to Trotsky in exchange for his renouncing all claims to Poland and White Russia. The Baltic States have similarly pledged support to Lenin. Lenin also has the support of the Siberian militias, although it is not clear what promises he made in exchange for this. The summer months, with an excellent harvest, have aided in the recruiting of troops to replace those lost in the recent fighting and plagues. The Reds have raised new forces in Vitebsk, Smolensk, and even Baku, while a huge Cossack force has organized outside Rostov. It remains to be seen how the leaders of the two sides will use the troops in the months ahead. GAME STATUS: Mike Collier has returned and will resume play of Player A. This turn's orders were submitted by John Schmidt. Thanks, John, for standing in! I will be leaving for an extended period next week. Therefore, I am postponing Turn 4 moves (November 1919) until after I return in late August or early September. I will write to the players upon my return and give them two weeks to negotiate for that turn. Have a good summer!
