Diplomacy zine - This Space Intentionally Left Blank From: daybell@aludra.usc.edu (Donald Daybell) Date: Tue, 08 Aug 1989 19:29:22 +0000 issue 86 of ELECTRONIC PROTOCOL ----------- Chapter One ----------- This chapter contains results for the games D-DAY, NAVARONE, BLITZKRIEG, OPERATION OVERLORD, GETTYSBURG, and HMS HOOD Fall 1905 of game D-DAY (BNC 1989AW) (GM is Pav@cs.duke.edu/ Paul Vick) To all players in D-Day: Hi! Remember me? I'm your replacement GM who said he'd get the game back on schedule! Anyway, here's what happened: 1) I was told that my system, romeo, would be down last Wednesday so it could be upgraded. My files would be moved and I would be able to conduct business as usual. 2) What really happened was that the upgrade wasn't finished until yesterday. Mail that was sent between Friday and Monday either never got here or got here about 48 hrs late - hence my mail asking some players for orders that were already sent. 3) No problem - a delay of 24 hrs at the most, right? Wrong. I logged back into my original (upgraded) machine only to find that my mail directory had disappeared and I wasn't getting any incoming mail. It wasn't until just NOW that I figured out (by accident) that my files are going to be permanently left on what I thought was going to be a temporary machine - I'll no longer be on romeo. No message from the system administration informing me that I was one of the lucky few to get left on macbeth once romeo had been upgraded, nothing. So where does that leave us? Fall '05 still hasn't run as I haven't heard from Germany. If he was stretching the truth about his new mail account, he will be replaced as soon as possible. My mail path should work as it did before, as romeo.cs.duke.edu can figure out to route my mail to macbeth.cs. duke.edu. My current phone number is (919) 684-0616 - I've been moved again. As a rule of thumb, if you can't reach me at my "current" #, call (919) 489 4672 and leave a message - that's my parent's house and they'll know how to reach me quickly. I send each season's report directly to all players as well as the GM of EP, so if you don't get a turn, write me and make sure mail isn't getting lost. At each point during the last few days I've tried to send out messages updating D-Day's status, but obviously they didn't make it out. I'm calling Germany as soon as I get off the mainframe, and so another update should be out tonight or tomorrow morning. My apologies to all. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paul Vick |Internet: pav@romeo.cs.duke.edu "Of course I'm being childish! General Konrad Delessack remarked, "We only used a quarter charge and it was still enough to straighten out the Matterhorn." It is believed that Swiss diplomats, using the threat of this new weapon, have been sucessful in securing treaties of non-agression with every major nation in Europe. This reporter, however, has been unable to gain conformation of this from any official sources. Foreign Ministers from Italy, Germany, Austria, and France all denied reports that the withdrawal of major portions of their armed forces from the vicinity of the Swiss border was due to this startleing revelation. The French even cited the example of their heroic forces in Paris as a counterexample. This reporter, however, later learned from a confidential source that they were merely pursuing the private train of a certain Madame Boudoir and her all-girl revue, who were bound for this fine city of Zurich. _______________________________________________________________________________ FLASH!!! FLASH!!! FLASH!!! There has been a terrible accident in the typesetting room. One of the chief assistiants to the sub-supervisior in charge of ink procurement accidentally tripped over the office cat, Snowflake, while carrying a fresh batch of printers ink. The ink flew across the room, striking the opposite wall. In itself, this would have been minor, except that the main supply of ink was stored there. The impact of the one can caused the remaining 43 cans to tumble to the floor, and the impact caused the entire room to be coated in black ink. This, unfortunately, included the copy for the current issue of the HMS HOOD Digest. It was a total loss. Fortunately there were no other serious injuries, though the cat is now known as Inky. Michael Jaeger, a local musician, was visiting the plant at the time. He is believed to be working on a song about this unfortunate incident. (Sorry, guys.
