Diplomacy zine -- E Pluribus Stabbum From: daybell@sal-sun42.usc.edu (Donald Daybell) Date: Fri, 04 Aug 1989 15:34:36 +0000 issue 85 of ELECTRONIC PROTOCOL ----------- Chapter One ----------- This chapter contains results for the games D-DAY, NAVARONE, BLITZKRIEG, OPERATION OVERLORD, GETTYSBURG, and HMS HOOD Fall 1905 of game D-DAY (BNC 1989AW) (GM is Pav@cs.duke.edu/ Paul Vick) To all players in D-Day: Hi! Remember me? I'm your replacement GM who said he'd get the game back on schedule! Anyway, here's what happened: 1) I was told that my system, romeo, would be down last Wednesday so it could be upgraded. My files would be moved and I would be able to conduct business as usual. 2) What really happened was that the upgrade wasn't finished until yesterday. Mail that was sent between Friday and Monday either never got here or got here about 48 hrs late - hence my mail asking some players for orders that were already sent. 3) No problem - a delay of 24 hrs at the most, right? Wrong. I logged back into my original (upgraded) machine only to find that my mail directory had disappeared and I wasn't getting any incoming mail. It wasn't until just NOW that I figured out (by accident) that my files are going to be permanently left on what I thought was going to be a temporary machine - I'll no longer be on romeo. No message from the system administration informing me that I was one of the lucky few to get left on macbeth once romeo had been upgraded, nothing. So where does that leave us? Fall '05 still hasn't run as I haven't heard from Germany. If he was stretching the truth about his new mail account, he will be replaced as soon as possible. My mail path should work as it did before, as romeo.cs.duke.edu can figure out to route my mail to macbeth.cs. duke.edu. My current phone number is (919) 684-0616 - I've been moved again. As a rule of thumb, if you can't reach me at my "current" #, call (919) 489 4672 and leave a message - that's my parent's house and they'll know how to reach me quickly. I send each season's report directly to all players as well as the GM of EP, so if you don't get a turn, write me and make sure mail isn't getting lost. At each point during the last few days I've tried to send out messages updating D-Day's status, but obviously they didn't make it out. I'm calling Germany as soon as I get off the mainframe, and so another update should be out tonight or tomorrow morning. My apologies to all. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paul Vick |Internet: pav@romeo.cs.duke.edu "Of course I'm being childish! MO: Relax. This is jussa skirmish, all part ov me grand plan, like. DB: A skirmish?! But this is a desperate titanic struggle for the control of the Ionian. MO: I dont givvu a bat's willy for the Ionian, just a few scrappy islands, not a decent beach in sight. DB: So what are we doing here then? MO: We're makin' 'em fink we want the Ionian. DB: Which we dont? MO: Thas right. DB: Well where do we want? MO: Oh I dont know fancied majorca f... (Under the influenece of the Fullers ESB, Mark one's accent became steadily less turkish) DB: You mean you are going to retreat. MO: RETREAT!!!! There now follows one of those slow motion sequences that were yet to be invented in 1904 and inappropriate to any medium apart from film in any case. However, the writer has taken a large dose of artistic licence, so you'll just have to bear with him. As a full pint of Fullers ESB plus drinking vessel headed in a distinctly davidward direction, he refelected that having avoided the indignity of being splatted by a shell on its way to greater things, being renedred senseless by a pint of Fullers ESB said a lot for the piteous state of reality. He could have stayed at home gone down the dog and whistle, got completely ratarsed on ESB and saved himself the fare. All this pseudo-philosophical musing wasnt helping him however, his core problem was to avoid if possible being hit by........ CFGHJUTYjutmh !!!! (For the unaquainted this is the sound made by a full pint of ESB striking a person on the temple. Fortunately our hero is made of solid stuff and the whole incident represented just a tempaorary blib in his reality flow.) MO: NEVER, THIS IS A STRATEGIC REGROUPING!!!! DB: Oh yes,... of course your majesty. (Our hero decided to strategically regroup to the deck and tackle Mark One again when the effects of the ESB had worn off, and then had second thoughts and decided to wait until the effects of the ESB wearing off had worn off.) ************************** Pete's Points: I made an error in calculating builds: France lost a unit in Kiel in the spring, so had only 6 units on the board for 7 centers; since he now has 8 centers he gets two builds. I have revised my reports to avoid this problem in the future. The Austria/France draw fails 0-5. There is a new proposal for a France/Austria/Italy draw. Next orders due Aug 21. Hopefully that will give you plenty of time negotiation and for schmoozing in the sun, as well as clearing up commuinca- tions problems and so on. Talk to you in two and a half weeks. [Could one of those page numbers be in error?] >From the Times of London, Spring, 1903 January 12, 1903 A consortium of banks to-day announced the extension of further loans to the Government of Morocco. Meanwhile, the Franco- German talks on the future of foreign interests in Morocco con- tinue, with a British observer to be assigned soon. February 8, 1903 Foreign Secretary Chamberlain and French Ambassador Paul Cambon announced that negotiations between France and England over colo- nial issues would begin soon in London. Issues to be addressed include Siam, fishing rights off Newfoundland, Nigerian boundaries, the New Hebrides, and Madagascar. Attention was expected to be focused on Egypt, where England needs French support in the Caisse de la Dette which controls Egyptian finance, and on Morocco, where Franco-German negotiations are stalemated on commercial rights and non-militarization. February 13, 1903 First Sea Lord Sir John Fisher to-day announced the movement of the new Atlantic Fleet and the Channel Fleet into the Irish Sea and English Channel. This is in response to the presence of the main Italian battle fleet in the Middle Atlantic. "We don't know what they're doing there, but I understand the olive oil washing up on the beaches in Brittany is wreaking havoc with wildlife. It's the sort of thing that makes us glad to be living in a land with truly great cuisine," said the jolly Fisher. February 18, 1903 (Berlin) Kaiser Tom the Second announced today that he would be visiting Morocco in March. He stated that "Morocco was an independent sovereign state, and Germany demands equal treatment for her commerce there." The British ambassador in Berlin said that a visit by the Kaiser and the issuing of such statements in veiled criticism of French efforts to gain recognition for her special status in North Africa was obviously engineered by extremist ele- ments in the German Foreign Ministry. February 22, 1903 The Royal Household announced to-day that His Majesty would be visiting France late next month in a goodwill visit which would be reciprocated by French President Loubet. Negotiations are underway for contingency planning in the case of further oil spills from the Italian fleet off the Norman and Brittanny coasts. March 1, 1903 British Fleets at the entry to the Baltic are on standby for orders to assist the Swedish government in its recurring political crisis. After Germany forced Sweden to accept occupation of key industrial and military sites by the German army last Fall, a secret liason was made between the Admiralty and the Swedish government in exile. New reports have the Swedish situation even more intolerable, with guttural sounds being heard at all hours of the night in fashionable districts of Stockholm. March 20, 1903 The Admiralty to-day announced the occupation of Sweden. "The trouble of keeping all those Scandinavian countries straight was just too great, so we decided to take over the entire penin- sula," said First Sea Lord Sir John Fisher. When told that Den- mark was also a Scandinavian country, Sir John said, "Yes, but they have {ll those f|nny l|tters in their }lphabets!" Sir John refused to comment on the likelihood of a Danish breakfast at this early date. -------- GM Notes: So far, two votes are still out and the 10-day turns proposal is still unresolved! We have a while longer to decide, however, since this turn must also be 10 days long. The reason: I am attending my sister's wedding and will be gone from Thursday the 10th until Sunday afternoon (13th). If by that time the 10-day turn proposal has failed, we will return to a regular weekly schedule. As usual, if there are problems with the results, please let me know ASAP. Adjustments (retreats or disbands from France and Austria) are due Sunday afternoon, but I will publish the results before then if I have them. Remember, those of you with email problems, if you need to route messages through me for lack of being able to find a working address for someone, feel free to do so, but keep in mind when I plan to be gone.
