My apologies to Austria that I took the better offer, to Turkey for being no more trustworthy than he was, and to Russia for snatching away his last hope. I hope we might all have better relations in future games. -Lord Valentine Could somebody e-mail me an archive of the game, if such a thing exists? (Will do, just give me a little time to dig it all out) Well, about all I can say about this game is thank God it's over! I hope that we have gotten in several years worth of drop-outs out of the way with this game. Oh yeah, and the winner of the Sybil award for most number of split personalities in one game is.........England, with a total of 3 known personalities in 5 years, or an average of 3.1 MPP (moves per personality) Congratulations to Keith and Ted for staying alive and in one mind long enough to win. Donald Daybell Well, that's all I got as End of game statements. I'd just like to thank those of you who finished the game and stuck with it to the end. The occupation of Vienna is the beginning of the conquest of the western Balkan penninsula. The units formerly occupying Munich were used in this attack. Asked why the change of heart, the Minister stated that since Russian armies have begun to assist the French and English, the Italian troops could be put to better use. This reporter asked the Prime Minister about the Turkish attack on the Ionian Sea naval units. The reply was short and sweet : "If the Turk wants war, he'll have it. We must defend the Pope. If the Turk builds a fleet, war will be inevitable." =============================== Le Monde - November 22 1902 =============================== FRENCH SCIENTIFIC BREAKTHROUGH! French scientist Prof. Louis LeQuac announced yesterday that not only are rascals sociable, in accordance with ancient Chinese legend, but they are extremely soluble as well. His announcement follows a series of experiments on well known rascals involving large vats of concentrated acid. Prof. LeQuac`s experiments were carried out in order to come up with a receipe for German Punch - as they seem to have none of their own. Here is the professor`s reciepe :- GERMAN PUNCH Ingredients 1 German Rascal 1 large vat of acid 1 gallon of vodka (Eastern Front permitting) 1 gallon of whiskey (Western Front permitting) Instructions Mix the ingredients in the vat. Drink the mixture until your throat dissolves. Sit out the rest of the war as a confused observer. ================================================== Reuters, Ankara, 3rd October 1902 The Turkish Prime Minister, Mr Bekir Yilmaz, spoke today of his sorrow at the genocide of 300,000 Turks in the Balkans. "The Austrian war machine tells us there is no Turkish minority in Serbia, Bulgaria or Greece. This was for once the truth - they had butchered the lot." The liberation of Greece has been greeted with street parties and demonstrations in support of the Government of Mr Yilmaz. "Free Serbia Now" was the popular chant as thousands of people filled Ankara's streets. The Admiral of the Second Fleet today described the background to the recent skirmish with an Italian Fleet in the Ionian Sea. He explained, "the Italian Fleet violated our five hundred mile exclusion zone. In response to this unprovoked hostility we had to retaliate. Turkey has had fishing rights in the Ionian for hundreds of years. We will defend these rights to the end!" ===================================================================== GM Notes: John Richards (Turkey) will be on holiday all next week. WE INTERRUPT THIS ZINE FOR AN IMPORTANT BULLETIN.... The British are coming!!! The British are coming!!! Without any opposition, the English army has made a successful landing into Belgium under the cover of darkness. The lack of opposition was due in part to the attempted invasion of Germany by France. The Kaiser was heard saying, "We will zrow the damn English back into ze see." In other news, the fighting has escalated along the Franco-German Border, especially the Ruhr region. Since this is a very important economic area, we expect a lot of fighting to occur here. Personall> I feel that the loss of this region, could start another war in the future. A strange event occured in Rumania lately. In a surprise move, both, the Turks and the Russians have sent supplies to the Austrian army stationed there. Considering the recent events, I am extremely suprised of such thing happening. Upon meeting, the Russians and the Turks were speechless. Both have demanded an explanation from the Austrian embassador. Wait!! A new development has occured. It would appear that the Russian and Turkish soldiers have gotten into a fist/knife fight with each other. We will have to wait and see as to what the Austrians will do. Currently, they are apparently content with just annexing Serbia and establishing control over the immediate area. In other news, Venice is still holding tough. The recent invasion of Austria by the army that was stationed there has left the city unprotected, but the population rose up to meet the foe using the arms and supplies sent from Rome. The mayor of Venice has ordered all of the historical buildings reinforced to save them from destruction. It would appear that the hit-and-run tactics with the gondoals are working. In a speech to the people of Venice, the mayor said, "We expecti helpp to bee comeen shortlee. Keeeep upp goodd workk." We now return you to your regularly scheduled zine..... <blink!> Press: ****************** * Der Berliner * ****************** The final arrangements have been made to perfect the Germany-Italy-Russia alliance. Immediate goals of this alliance have been set as follows: Scandanavia goes to Russia England goes to Germany France goes to Italy This pact has been made in reaction to the imperialistic leanings of the England-France and Austria-Turkey alliances. These truces have left us with n> choice; we must band together or be consumed from the South and West. Longer term goals are laying Turkey and Austria to waste. Of course, we hope you guys give us a fight, but we don't expect you to win! Deposed Serbian leader Milos Petrovic, after his nation was overrun by Austrian soldiers last fall, was rumored to have fled to Bulgaria to lead terrorist forces against what he said was "the unlawful and unjustified occupation of Serbia by Austrian military scum." In a special news conference yesterday, Emperor Charles declared that all Austrian forces have standing orders to capture the exiled Serbian president and "bring him to justice" in Vienna, where he faces charges of treason which carries a penalty of death. The Austrian foreign relations minister made several statements this week. He denounced Turkish occupation of Bulgaria as "helping Petrovic and his rebel forces" and promised that Austria would "rid the Turks from Bulgaria and punish them for giving aid to Petrovic and his traitorous forces." He also criticized the apparent Anglo-German alliance and promised that "Austrians will help France any way they can" and praised the German promise to begin peace talks with the French government, although he added that the construction of naval forces in the Berlin area is "straining the peace between the east and the west and inviting conflict in Scandinavia." -CONSTANTINOPLE- The Turkish government today decided to try to re-open communications with Russia. The Foreign Minister declared "We knew they were upset when our Admiral made a wrong turn and found himself in the Black sea. He has been severely punished for drinking on duty. Thank Allah he did not hit a reef.... We sincerely hope our recent efforts in clearing the Black Sea will result in renewed trust with our northern neighbors." GM comments: With three gamestarts in the past week we are getting bigger and bigger! Note that this zine will be kept under control by seperating it into more and more chapters. We should be up to 3 chapters in another week or so, I just want to make sure chapter 1 is running smoothly before I get another chapter going. We currently have 73 active players, 58 are from the U.S., 7 are from Canada, 2 from England, 1 from Finland, 2 from Ireland, 1 from Sweden, 1 from Switzerland, and 1 from The Netherlands. I am surprised at the international flavor that this zine is acquiring. Even more amazing is that the international connections seem to be causing me less problems than the local connections. (Poor GETTYSBURG went through three local U.S. players as we tried to find people whose connections were O.K.) Note that I have game openings for regular Diplomacy, gunboat Diplomacy, and the 1914 variant. I need GMs for postal games, gunboat games, and regular games. Here are the answers to my contest from Mark Lorrimer-Roberts/ sun!hss.cs.ucl.ac.uk!mlr%psychology.nottingham.ac: 1. True or false: there is NO area on the board that does not border at least one supply center. FALSE Brest doesn't Answer: Brest borders Paris, but there is some other area that meets this criteria. 2. Which sea space borders the most areas? NORTH SEA Answer: Right! 3. Which land space borders the most supply centers? SERBIA Answer: Right! 4. HOW MANY land spaces border seven other areas? 8 (NORWAY, KIEL, MUNICH, BURGANDY VENICE GALICIA TRIETSE RUMANIA) I am assuming that Switzerland doesnt count as an area if it does then the answer is 6) Answer: Right! Very good answer since everyone got it wrong in the original contest. 5. Which area has the LEAST number of borders? PORTUGAL 2 Answer: Right! 6. True or false: a unit moving FROM a space has no effect on that space during that season, under any circumstances. FALSE; fleet A could dislodge fleet B attempting to convoy an army to the space from which fleet A is departing. Thus affecting the status of the space. Answer: Sounds good to me. 7. True of false: it is impossible for any country to control 18 centers before 1903. TRUE. Answer: Right! 8. True or false: for several countries, it is impossible to control 18 centers before Fall 1904. TRUE England and Italy cannot (although both can *capture* the requisite number by Spring 04) Answer: It is False. Italy could get VIE, TRI and TUN in '01. Then RUM, BUL, GRE, MUN, SPA in '02. Then MOS, SEV, SMY, DEN, SER, MAR, POR in '03. (Other combinations possible.) England could get NWY, DEN, and BRE in '01 (Germany convoying LON-DEN), then SPA, SWE, MUN, HOL, BEL, KIE (HOL, KIE, and BEL all convoyed) in '02 then TUN, VEN, PAR, STP, BER, POR (POR is convoyed) in '03. I could be wrong, but it looks like England's neighbors would have to do quite a bit of convoying for England to get 18 centers in three years. It would be wild for a group of players to allow England to get 18 centers in three years just to put the game in the record books! 9. Assuming a country is willing to give up everything else to be SURE of a certain neutral center in 1901, how many of these centers are sure to fall to one of the powers from their starting positions? The question is invalid since Russia can be prevented from gaining a neutral in 01. ENG prevents Russia gaining Norway, Germany the same for Sweeden, Turkey and Austria prevent any gains in the BALKANS. Answer: You are right, the answer for the quiz was wrong. 10. Assuming six countries start and continue in civil disorder, which active nation can take enough centers to total 18 the quickest? Russia can gain 18+ supply centres by Fall 03 no other country can beat this. Answer: Right! Conclusion: Mark did real well with this contest, better than anyone who originally responded to the first contest and he even found a flaw in question 9. In question 8, the author didn't bother to show why every country could get 18 centers in three years, so I found it interesting to prove that England and Italy could do it. It was actually quite easy for Italy to get 11 centers in two years, with the remaining 7 easy to get in the third year. England was a pain, I kept coming up a center or two short. So I just convoyed like crazy and got England the 18 centers. Daniel Loeb has been managing a list of all the Diplomacy games on Usenet. I now have a pretty good idea of how it works and will talk about features of his list as I learn them. I would recommend that you send the following to listserv@mitvma.bitnet: SUBSCRIBE DIP-L PW ADD DIP AFD ADD ONGOING GAMES PW=DIP AFD ADD HALLOF FAME PW=DIP GET ONGOING GAMES GET HALLOF FAME You may replace the word DIP with your own password. The AFD commands will send you updates frequently for HALLOF FAME and ONGOING GAMES. You could type FUI instead of AFD if you only wanted to be notified when updates are available. The GET commands give you the latest info for HALLOF FAME and ONGOING GAMES. (GET only sends you this info once, you need the AFD or FUI commands to continously get this info.) DIP-L sends you general information about Diplomacy. HALLOF FAME contains game summary info. ONGOING GAMES contains info on games that are ongoing or being formed. If you wish to follow the 20 player Diplomacy variant being run, type SUBSCRIBE D20A-L. Type SIGNOFF ONGOING GAMES if you don't want to get this list anymore, the same with the other lists. One more possiblity is to type HELP to get more info. If you discover anything interesting, let me know! Note that I may be running this service in the future, so if you have any suggestions on how to make it more userfriendly, send me your ideas. Would you like to improve the quality of TV that we get? If so, send something like the following letter to Paramount Studios, ST:TNG - Cooper Building, 5555 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90038 "I wish to protest the non correction of two major mistakes in ST:TNG. First the mentioning that -391 celsius is possible in The Royale and second the showing of Tasha in stardates that were AFTER her death. The second problem could easily be fixed with a little dubbing and the first problem is so blatant that it MUST be corrected. While I can tolerate your continual plot mistakes, such as what looked like Worf taking over the Ferengi computers in Peak Performance, I believe that these two major mistakes should be corrected." By the way, the third season will be better than the second season, which was better than the first all because of a lot of complaints by ordinary and not so ordinary people. (You won't be seeing those stupid Ferengi again!) If you want to add some additional comments to your letter, you could mention that Shades of Grey was the worst episode ever shown and that the name of the episode Q WHO should be changed to BORG. (Q WHO was a great show, lousy name.) Finally, the Klingon emissary will be in another episode this season, can't wait to see her again! (My VCR died the day this episode was shown, couldn't tape it.) Too bad she is only a fictional character based on a fictional race. She is the type of woman I would like to marry. Tough yet smart. I am enjoying moderating this zine, keep that mail coming! Eric Klien Up
